I just don't get the workaholics. To me it is just a waste of life.I can probably count on two hands the number of 40 hr. weeks I've put in throughout my whole life, yet my home is paid for, no other debt. 'Course I've got no kids which I know makes a huge difference, they cost six figures a piece to raise. But still, 70hr. weeks are insane! You'll get to the end of your life with no memories but the office and driving to and from there.
You don't get it because you don't have a passion for your profession, you just have a job. I love the 12-16 hours I put it, I don't just watch the clock and wait for the 1st and 15th. Sourcing deals, researching deals, negotiating deals, selling companies or bringing them public: the intesity of it all is an incredible rush. I'm late 20's and my work memories and stories are incredibly rewarding to think about, and I anticipate many more years. If the commute is all you have to look back upon, all you've done is spent a bunch of miserable 8 hour days working towards nothing.
The money is nice too, but the drive to be the best at what I do consumes me, just like it should any top athlete. I'll never go to the Olympics, but I can make a serious run at the Forbes top 400 list, and if I only get half-way, I've done a lot better than most.
Assuming you work 8 hours, sleep 8 hours, what is so great about the remaining 1/3 of the day if you hated the first eight hours?
