The house party they “hosted” was an annual track-wide team party that moreso happened to be at their house. One person got transported because of drinking on meds and Duke admin was notified and the coaches had to put the heat on someone, so it was the guys house even though they did nothing but generously provide the venue for an event that has occurred annually on the track team for 10+ years.

Stories like this should make everyone scared to coach. What is a college coach anyway? Someone that is supposed to make you better at running and look out for the best interest of the university.
As these stories come out it seems like more and more athletes want to get better at running with ZERO accountability and the coach is supposed to be a one stop shop for all your problems but never be honest or challenge you.

Not every team has to have a life-running balance like NAU/BYU etc. People can have fun. Sure, a partying team likely won't become a top-10 NCAA program, but that's not everyone's goal. These kids are at college to prepare for their career and ENJOY their running experience. For some people, enjoyment comes from mimicking a professional athlete but most like to have some balance. I personally think many people take it too seriously.
Maybe you can walk out of college with a 5k PR 15 seconds faster but at the cost of de-prioritizing other aspects of life like school, making friends, partying, etc. 5 years down the line when you're still selling insurance, nobody (including yourself) is going to care whether you were a 13:55 or a 13:40 guy. If you're Nico Young or Grant fisher, then that commitment is surely worth it but for 95+% of these D1 athletes I personally believe they put too much pressure on themselves (as well as receive too much pressure from coaches).

And yes it was 100% scholarship. I know for a fact. Part of recruiting package for that class was that their 5th year would be 100%, so they had to pay tuition through undergrad and then were promised a paid 1-year business masters.
Duke is where runners go to end their careers. It’s been this way for many years, particularly on the men’s side. They get great recruits who prefer involving themself in the Duke social/professional scene than training hard.

I recently ran at a d1 school similar in academics and xc performance as duke. Sometimes kids party. Sometimes the fast kids party in the early parts of the season, too. Listen to the duke xc team member posting on here. College track teams all over the country have annual parties. Whoever was drinking on meds that was their own fault—how is everyone supposed to know what medication everyone else is on?
