Unfortunately, the athletes usually have to stay in a village that's built poorly where the Olympics committee saved money on the games budget. That's how the corporate world works. Fueled by greed and dollar signs over humans. The business wants to please only people that pay money/buy their product and they see everyone else as a pile of dirt, which would be the athletes in the village and the workers who build and maintain are dirt to them as well. Spending money to please athletes in the village won't bring in extra money, so it's designed on the cheapest budget. They don't care about people, they care about dollar signs.

There's an asterisk before every E African medal. But it isn't for lack of AC.

Many actually would have it in their homes given Olympic athletes are among the privileged in those countries.

I mean I thought you lived in a cave ;-)? So you should know that it can be 50 in a cave while it's 90 outside. The heat exchange system actually could work better than traditional AC in certain circumstances.

I have spent a lot of time in Europe (for family reasons) and they really just don't use AC the way we do. They also don't seem to complain about the heat as much. It is hot in the summer. That is normal. They are okay with it.

I am very confident that it is no different in Africa; if anything, I would bet the athletes in question are much more accustomed to "living in heat" and are tough enough to not think twice about it. If you train and live without AC, I don't think it is super smart to suddenly move into a "chilly" building right before your most important race.

But the most interesting thing about the Europeans and AC is that they hate the constant change of hot-cold-hot-cold of going in and out of cold buildings. They also hate the "breeze" of indoor air. My wife's family thinks it makes you sick! I have been on road-trips with Europeans and they simply don't put on the AC because they don't want to "catch a cold or get a sore throat." They'd rather swelter in a hot car than risk a slow death! :)

p.s. I am also somewhat anti-AC since places are kept so cold now that in the middle of Summer you have to "take a sweater" if you plan on being inside for a long time. There is no reason to drop the temps down to 68° in the movie theater just because it is 98° outside! The contrast is jarring.

The geothermal system can keep the indoor temp 6 c cooler than outside. That means if it is 86 deg outside, it will be 75 inside. 90 deg outside will mean about 78 inside. The system uses cool water in underground aquifers that keeps a constant temp of about 57 degrees to pump cool air into the buildings while warm air is circulated out. At night, temps will be very comfortable indoors using the geothermal system. I have been in an office building that had a similar system and was surprised at how well the system works.

I am old enough to remember a time before Letsrun. We simply didn't know what was happening in the sport of running until our Track & Field News arrived in the mail. I am not going to complain about typos* when you think of how much content we get (for free) from essentially a staff of like four people and some interns!

* I will complain about people who write/say "have ran." It is always RUN > RAN > Have RUN. People who write "have ran" are driving me crazy. It is as bad a saying "have ate a cookie" or "have saw a movie."

The French will tell you it doesn't get hot in Paris, so there's no need for air conditioning, but that's not exactly true. Every year the summer gets warmer. With metal roofs of most buildings and minimal tree cover, Paris isn't built to handle extreme heat. When heatwaves hit, hundreds of people die.

A week out from today, the forecast is for 90 degrees...

Imagine if they didn't bring their own A/C. Then we would have another type of outrage over not taking care of our athletes. It's a lose lose situation.

I’ve lived in flag for 10 years. I’ve never had AC since being here. Gets to mid 90s in the summer. Had some pretty incredible training post college without AC. Seems like a non-starter unless you’re acclimated to needing AC. Soft Ivy leaguers would never understand.

If anything, it would suggest that British runners would also be just fine without AC.
