If we count those who "go sub4 in practice", can we also open up this discussion to include animals? What was that horse's name in that movie? Beethoven?? I bet he's run his fair share!

Yep. El G ran 4xmile with splits of 3:46, 3:43, 3:44, and 3:43 to prep for his world record run. After doing this workout, setting the world record in a real race was a cake walk.
haha that's classic. anyways, i think it is an impressive feat that Steve Scott ran that many sub- miles which don;t even include 1500 conversions or practices. people don;t race that much any more to acheive what steve scott did. that is hardcore.
"If" you can hit your mile PB twice in a workout, you're doing something wrong.
Hicham El G is on EPO!!

Would El G ever even run that in practice though? That's like 2 mile race pace for him. What's the point of doing repeat miles at 2 mile race pace?
I don't think people really do that.
In "The Greatest" the author watches Geb run 4x1200 in 2:55, 4x8 in under 2, and 4x4 in 55 + 4 miles tempo. The 2:55 1200s are about the same as a 4:00 mile. I think somewhere else in the book he runs the last rep (a 1600) saying he always likes to run under 4. Breaking 4 minutes in practice is not far fetched at all, especially considering someone like El G would presumably do repetitions even faster than geb over short distances.
That is absurd...
Marcus O\'Sullivan 100)
I believe O\'Sullivan has 101 sub 4\'s
o'sullivan 'only' has 100? i thought he had the most sub 4's...maybe that was just for indoors.
i think he was first person over 40 to break 4 as well.
"has run"
Seabiscuit. That's who I was thinking of... I bet he's done a good number of sub-4s in practice and in races.
EARNHARDT
I seem to remember reading about some insane pyramid/ladder/stepdown workout that Kennedy did when he was training in Kenya where they did a mile or 1600, 1200, 800, and 400, starting with a sub-4 mile. Does anyone have details about this?
Tim Broe does something similar in 'The 5000m' documentary. He does a step-up ladder, 400, 800, 1200, mile. He goes :56, 1:56, 2:56, 4:02. Coach asked him to break the 4-minute mile, and he just missed it. Either way, that workout is stupid.

I read that part too. Insane on that 2 x 5k workout he did where he the first in what was it 13:25 on a hilly course. than ran the second one even faster. It was his prep workout for his 27:02 10k road world record.

I dont know how Kennedy ran but Komen went
1600 - sub-4 (i think 3'54")
1200 - in like 2:52
800 - in 1:55
400 - in under 55.
i dont recall the exact numbers but i know there were all significantly under 4min pace.
Who has the most consecutive? Is it still Steve Scott?
Who has run the most sub-4 minutes miles including conversions from 1500 m? Is it still Steve Scott? Pardon my ignorance.
marcus o'sullivan. i'm pretty sure.
What's a shame is that most runners these days hardly race, especially the American ones.
When Scott was running, the elite raced, a lot. To wit his 137 sub4s.
How can the US ever expect to build a fan base when you have to wait 6mos or more for a guy to run 1 race? Now it's all about chasing a WR.
How many races has Webb done this year? If I were sponsoring him I'd ask him to race at least 1xmonth and fcuk chasing WR for the moment.
