Interesting that Jakob immediately lashes out at the interviewer when he even gets a hint of a question that might vaguely be interpreted negatively. “Will you practice different racing styles” is a pretty tame question but clearly set him off and that mocking tone he used afterwards was childish.
Idk, I know you guys love Jakob’s confidence but to me he sometimes comes off as a spoiled rich kid who’s been told his whole life that he’s the greatest and attacks anyone who hints otherwise.
I love watching him race and generally root for him, but some of his interviews just make me cringe (which I know is an unpopular opinion around here).
I did not get that impression from him. He was respectful of the interviewer and gave evidence for why he was saying the things he was saying. Where specifically did he use a mocking tone? He may have been somewhat frustrated because he gets the same questions everytime he races so I can see that.
I know Jakob says he's still building fitness but I think that it's going overlooked how tricky it is to come up for a race plan for Jakob after that Pre mile. Like really, if you were his coach and you're mapping out his Paris 1500, how would you design it?
Does he take the lead at 500m and try to solo the rest of the race like he did in Budapest? That won't work unless he can solo a 3:26. Kerr and Wightman have better foot speed, so he can't leave it any slower than 3:30, and he can't risk a tactical first two laps because then it's anybody's race.
In contrast, Kerr's plan is really simple. It's why I think he's the favorite, and why that Pre mile was such a win psychologically
Too bad he is never healthy in any race than means something (dumb time trials are meaningless).
Well, he looked very healthy in the Olympics (at least to me). And he said he felt good in WC 2022 1500m, and in both finals in WC 2019, and in steeple in WC 2017, so why do you say never healthy..?

Fair enough. But I think Jakob is fed up of people telling him that the guy with most 800m speed kicks the best in a fast 1500m race, when he himself (rightly I believe) thinks the strongest runner has the best kick…

He was sick in Budapest and ran stupidly in Eugene. There is no difference. He has also gotten silver at each of these, not dead last. Stop pretending like he sucks at championship races, he doesn’t. His approach works majority of the time when he’s 100%.

Not working well = One olympic gold, two WC silvers, one wc silver indoor, two EC golds at 23. Its strange, because I can swear that "not working well" is working a lot better than most others. I get that people don't like Jakob and root for other runners, but its a bit strange to start rewriting history. He is not the worlds largest 1500m failure just because he got two second places the last 12 months or so.
Does the tactics of Kerr (One olympic bronze and one WC gold), Wightman (One WC gold, one EC bronze) work so much better than Jakob? Or do everyone, at least the three mentioned, run to their own strength as best they can (while sometimes screwing up) where the best runner at the day takes the gold?

Kerr: 1 olympic bronze, 1 wc gold WORKING
Wightman: 1 wc gold, 1 ec bronze WORKING
Ingebrigtsen: 1 olympic gold, 2 wc silver, one wc silver (I), two ec golds NOT WORKING
Adding on his two 5000m WC golds, two 5000m EC golds, 5 EC indoor golds shows that Ingebrigtsen have no idea about championship racing and have the worst approach to non-rabbited races out there. Being on the podium on every championship from the last olympics untill this one clearly shows that.

They try to ask him if he’s going to adjust his preparation for Paris at all and he says that if he’s winning 18 out of 20 times then that’s a good success rate and he doesn’t need to change his approach. The interviewer (Mac Fleet) agreed with him at this point, though it seems Jakob is missing a key point: it’s consistently working in races where he has a rabbit the first 900 meters but has had a very low success rate in non-rabbited races, which is what Paris will be.
I would have expected him to recognize this so was surprising to hear his response and how he mentally groups the Diamond League and championship-style races into the same bucket.
It’s a reasonable option and was how Timothy Cheruiyot won in 2019. Ingebrigtsen has been living and breathing competitive distance running for over 10 years, yet you know what he should do?

He’s not an idiot and he’s raced countless times. Based on that experience,and the quality of his training leading up to the Olympics, he’ll go with what feels right and he might not decide until the day of the final.
When comes to what he should do, he’s playing chess and you’re getting double jumped in checkers.
The Diamond League is not meaningless. And those races are not time trials. It is the Pro Circuit. It is what we have in our sport. That is like saying Jokic is bad at basketball because he is the regular season MVP but doesn't win the big games! He was literally the champ last year.
Jacob has gotten gold-silver at the last two World Champs (5000m & 1500m) and 1500m gold at the last Olympics. He also has won almost all the pro races. He also has the 2M world record. If losing now-and-then means you are terrible, then how good are the other guys? They lose even more often than he does! Let's be honest, Jakob is the best all-around distance runner in the world right now, even coming off an injury.
Kerr is amazing and might be the best 1500 this year in Paris. That does not mean Jakob is "terrible" and "sucks" at running. Jokic (for example) can be the best player in the NBA and also not in Finals this year. Two things can be true at the same time. It is confusing and difficult for some people to understand but trust us, it is possible.

Kerr was the better runner yesterday. But it is a fact that Jakob missed several months of training. And to deny that would be intellectually dishonest, yet you and several other people do so simply because you dislike Jakob's personality...
If you line up at the start you are the same as everyone else in the race. No one cares what injuries you've had or how your training went. Everybody has their issues to deal with. Once the gun goes off you win or lose on your merits. No excuses.

We gave a different understanding of what a kick is. Look at videos of Snell in the 1500 at Tokyo (and before that, Modesto in '63), Ryun in the '67 Colosseum Relays, and Coe in the Moscow 1500. They crushed it. Despite his fantastic endurance Jakob simply doesn't have that kind of overdrive.
It's taken a few threads for you to concede that. But Jakob never will.
I have never doubted that Kerr from the beginning of the indoors season, through what we saw in Eugene Saturday, and probably some weeks further on, is the indisputable best miler in the world.
And based on his interviews I think Jakob agrees. This is no difficult for him -what’s difficult (for him, like some others) is nevertheless not being cocky and insulting…
