1. The own the podium post above is correct, as always. I know our american friends struggle to grasp the severity of this concept being the scourge of athletics in many similarly sized (population) countries around the world. And dont let the marketing debate smoke screen fool you, its austerity and the slow death of publically supported initiatives in support of cut tax populism. Being decided by politicians and the oligarch class seeking the privatization and capitalization of every aspect of society.
2. The point about Canadians just moving on with their lives is also painfully true. Participation (as a percentage of population or per capita, not gross participation) in formal sport between Grade 9 and the end of university is dwindling. If it wasnt for girls increased participation in sport from the 90s to 2010s, many sports would already be under water. If we have ready passed the peak of girls participation then trouble is coming. Park to the side the increase in access to higher level elite participation and improved quality, because if that is not being propped up and fed by a wide/broad grassroots population, then the success of elite participants is phony and more and more the product of ultra wealthy access to opportunity.
3. Numbers: In one mid sized sized city in Canada (100k-250k), participation in cross country running drops from a peak around Grade 6 (U12) of 300-400 kids per gender participating, and by Grade 9 (U15) has between 25-35 participants, per gender. For that entire municipality. That's bleak.
4. Canada has some incredible athletes that are cross trained in other disciplines. There is no source of financing, will, or interest from the Athletics governing bodies to leverage the extremely low hanging fruit and attract and use these athletes from age 15-21. The RBC athlete search program is trying to find "womens 8 rower #7" or "bobsled b-team pusher guy #3" to fill olympic sport holes, but athletics like a lot of sports is contently sitting back with tiny microscopic participation rates not doing a bloody thing to fix the exodous of kids after their Grade X gym teacher stops forcing them to go to track and field day.
5. Just recently discovered the Canadian Track and Field League (CTFL), and good for those guys for what they are attempting! They deserve the corporate marketing financial support without strings attachdd and i hope they get it.
