Gabby Thomas' 776 Invitational to offer biggest purse for all-female track event

Why are the Olympics popular, and the diamond league isn’t? I believe it’s the fact that it’s a team event. In the Olympics, you can root for a country (you don’t need to know anything about the athletes or the event).
Same can be said for the other popular team sports (NBA, NFL, Etc).
I think the only hope for track and field popularity would be to somehow make it a team competition. I can’t think of any individual sports that have a big following outside of their marquee event.

I think Golf (PGA) is very popular and tennis seems to have a good following. The difference is everybody in the competition is competing for the same title, track & field has many events going on at each meet. No one really is the best track and field athlete, they are the best 100 runner, 1500 runner, long jumper, etc…it is a lot for people to try and support and stay interested in.

Maybe like golf and tennis T&F needs four marquee meets each year where the very best compete against each other, but instead we get the “best” 3 from each country finally meeting at the end of the season at worlds or Olympics and barely facing each other the rest of the year.

So what would happen if there was an all male track meet with that prize money? There'd be lawsuits everywhere getting it stopped.

Serious question, how is this profitable/sustainable?

I'm genuinely curious and need someone to explain to me like I'm 5.

That's the questions everyone is trying to figure out.

But general premise is Big Stars, Big Marketing "Biggest female prize money event ever", Big TV, = Big sponsorships and big attendance and hopefully you turn a profit.

The attendance will not be there. This will be a big money loss

Like the “Big” meet in LA last year, this will be one and done.

TRANS only would solve a lot of problems
