In this podcast from this past spring, Ben explains he’s not interested in competing at the Olympics because unfortunately there’s no money in it. Sure, his sponsorship stock could go up but he said that he would much rater try to medal at a major. If we don’t see him in either Chicago or NYC marathons this fall, I think he may he done.
Lols what a fantasy. It's like some journeyman MLBer saying "I'd rather hit a walk-off grand slam in the World Series than pitch a shut-out to win the World Series." Any glimmer of hope for either running in the Olympics or making a WMM podium has certainly passed years ago. And if the marathon were really his thing now, why didn't he show up in Orlando?

I think we can pump the brakes on Cheptegei being washed up just a little bit. If he wins gold in Paris he will be arguably the greatest 10k runner in history.
WC-silver, gold, gold, gold
Oly (assuming Paris win) 1 silver, 1 gold, (5000m gold)
WR holder
World Cross Champion 2019.
I for one will reserve judgment until after the Olympics, he always peaks well for championships.
Ben True soft retired recently and I haven't seen anything on here about it yet. He qualified for the Trials Marathon but had decided already to retire which is why he didn't run and hasn't been running as much since then (as can be seen on Strava).
Finished with PRs of 13:02 (pre super shoes) and 27:14. Finished 6th at World Cross, 6th at World Outdoors in the 5K, and finished 7th at the 2021 NYC Marathon in 2:12. Great career!
Thanks for this. Ben was really great, and really underappreciated (and stupidly maligned) by the idiots who populate most comment-threads here.
He was the best US road-racer AND our best 5000 guy for a period that stretched a good 4 or 5 years.
And he was super-cool for always going his own way --even when that meant he had to coach himself, train himself, and finance himself for long stretches.
He also always did a tremendous job of objectively evaluating every aspect of top-level training and running, and ignoring conventional wisdom blindly followed by most.
One example is how he looked at ice-baths. So many runners torture themselves that way just because they've seen others do it. Ben studied it, couldn't find *any* evidence that it's got any actual value at all, so completely eschewed it.
And thanks for making me go back and watch the '15 World's race. Great stuff.

An absolutely amazing all-time field in that race. Ben didn't have enough on the last lap to contend for the win, but still gives a very good account of himself against some of the best who ever lived (and comes within inches of pipping Rupp at the line).
(All 3 Americans with very solid performances in that race. Nice to see.)
Some crazy race, too. The top 7 all close in ~152.5 or less. wild.
And of course it's a hell of a reminder why nobody could beat Mo for about five years there. He closes in just under 1:49. Yikes.
I don't know if he had some artificial 'help' or not, but Jesus it's impressive to see.
If Ben's done, then best luck to him in everything he does, and thanks for an exemplary career.

okay, I'm not gonna say "Kenyan" but I will say Ben paved the way for Paul's triumph.
Winning Diamond League is serious business. Where the best of the best show up to go fast, no per-country limits, no rounds, no tactics. Okay there was tactics in True's race, which was bad tactics by those he outkicked.
There are tactics in every race. Running fast from the gun is a tactic
Don't forget he also SMOKED Robby Andrews in a 1500 at the 2016 Boost Boston Games Won it in 3:36
