Lex Young 29:25 2nd to last

The problem is it doesn’t seem like Lex and Leo have progressed aerobically since high school. Lex ran an 8:43 3200m as a sophomore, 13:43/7:57 as a junior, and 13:34 as a senior. Now he’s run 29:25/13:49/7:55 as a college frosh.

Leo ran 3:39 as a strength based high school runner and now only 13:46

Compare that to Nico ran 13:50 in high school and 13:24 his freshman year of college

At the end of the day running is an aerobic sport and Lex and Leo don’t seem any aerobically fitter than they did as high school seniors or even juniors

Anyway, I think the problem is that they are not as hungry as the other guys anymore. They have the money sponsorships, the followers, the popularity now.. they also strike me as the type who are out partying a lot. Probably drinking, probably get ill a lot because of it.

You don't even make sense. You complain because they do too much aerobic work but then you also complain that their aerobic conditioning isn't good enough. You know Stanford is not at altitude, right?

Aren't Leo and Lex absurdly talented? Why aren't they disciplined at hitting high mileage?

How much speed work does Ingebritsen do?

Stanford is a place to become a student and get a great job. You don’t pick Stanford to develop as a runner and do impressive things on the track. No good coach wanted the Stanford job and they got what they got for a reason

But how much quality is he doing? Elite performance is always a function of volume * intensity of training. Some athletes respond better to high volume with relatively less intensity than their low-volume counterparts who may get injured at those high volumes but handle lots of quality very well.

Some athletes need good coaching in order to run fast and bad coaching in order to perform poorly.

I was stating the obvious because I don't like it when it's suggested that one runner who does 70 mpw must be supremely gifted because they don't need to do triple digits.

Triple digit miles in high school and or triple digit miles in University definitely produce fast times… for a time. Not necessarily the optimum for long term development nor longevity.

I think these guys are doing great off of what they are doing and there is no need to change to super high mileage for quicker results during university years. They are running solid times and have proven talent. Stanford is a place where most go to school to go to school. Finding that balance between athletics, academics and being a young person having some fun is hard at any higher learning institution and even harder at the more selective higher learning institutions.

There isn’t many athletes that I can think of who did big miles during high school, carried that through University and were able to excel as a professional for a long career. In fact, under the triple digit miles regime some of those “generational talents” fall apart during high school or during University or never pan out as a pro and people ride on them to the point they quit the sport because of injuring or not living up to lofty expectations other put on them.

Nothing wrong with 70 -85 miles per week during University and getting it done in the classroom and on the track then transitioning to the pros and giving it a few years to actively progress.

Thinking long term is in the best interest of the athlete. Not so often headed by coaches that want results and bonuses at University and not so often headed by coaches and parents during high school that think their athlete or kid is the next phenom.

Case in point is Grant Fisher. He had great results through high school and college because he was surrounded by people who understood talent and long term development. Could he have done even more during those years - yes. How did he do after one year of higher mileage as a pro and how is he doing now - he is a world beater and has many more years ahead at that level.

Leo ran a 13:46 5k yesterday. Same heat Colin salhman won in 13:38. Leo was 5th. Alex Maier was just in front of him in 13:40 which seems like a bad race for alex?

Lex is to the longer distances as Cade Flat is to middles distances. I at least hope they are fun in college.

The fix is easy, Young needs to transfer to NAU and Flatt to UF. Smith and Mouse will get them cleaned up real quick.

7:55 (or 7:54 - I don't remember which and I don't care since that's no real difference) 3000 indoors should be far better than 13:46 5000 outdoors.

I think Lex just had a really bad day. Leo running 13:46 isn't ideal but it isn't terrible either. Lex still ran 13:49 indoors which was faster than he ran indoors last year. 29:25 probably isn't the fastest he could go.

Sometimes freshman have an adjustment period, hopefully next year it will click. They ain’t leaving Stanford. Only an idiot leaves one of the best universities in the world, they’ll stick it out like that Harvard dirtbag who quit the team.
