Dude is at the end of his career, which isn't bad so much as it just "is." Getting "old" and injuries the past few years have negated and chance he had to chasing the marathon AR or winning another major. But that's just the reality and ok! He has no-questionably had a successful (but highly, highly controversial) career, so it's not like he has a lot more to do or has a lot of "what ifs" left to cement himself as an American all-time great. And "losing" records isn't that big of a deal as all are broken eventually and what's more important is setting them in the first place. He can compete for another year or two, earn some cash to throw on the pile, and finally rest on his laurels.
I don't see Rupp doing this, but Bill Rogers was running races up to a few years ago.
I talked to him at the Utica Boilermaker about 8 years ago.
I think he needed the money- he still got paid to be at the expo- but distance runners can race as long as they want.
Martin Fiz was still racing and setting age group records last year and Joan Samuelson does the same.
In other pro sports that's not possible. It's one of the very positive aspects of our sport.
I was in high school when Boston Billie was at his best and to meet him and talk to him was a great opportunity. I was also able to talk to Katherine Switzer and her husband Roger Robinson. They both ran the race as well.
