Is it based? Or is it cringe?
Let's break it down:
- It can be convenient to have one last name in a family, where both parents have the same last name as their kids.
- It can be convenient for the woman to take the guy's name, since that's tradition and it might be less confusing.
- It can be convenient for both to keep their original separate last names, like if both are doctors in a small town.
- It can be convenient for the guy to take the woman's name, like if his last name sucks.
- If any of those conveniences suit your circumstances, go for it. If there's some advantage to doing something different, do that instead.
- If anyone tells you you 'should' do something with your last name, or that the woman 'should' take the guy's last name "just because it's right", tell them to get bent.
- It's like the tradition that men propose to women. If that tradition suits you for whatever reason, you can do it, but if someone tells you that you should follow a tradition 'just because', they suck and they're wrong.
