I'm no longer that shocked by Nuguse's progression.
I only recently came across a video of him solo running 3:34.68 back in 2021 (Collegiate record? I'm not American so idk). That was his PB that year but showed that he was capable of low 3:30s.
For comparison, Jakob solo ran 3:33 at his nationals champs in 2020 and 2021. And his PB was 3:28 in both of those years.
In the discussion of Katir and Nordas and big leaps, why does nobody mention Nuguse?
To go from 3:53 to 3:43 in the mile in one year at 24, after improving by four seconds in the previous 3 years, is pretty crazy
Naguse barely went into pro running. Have you watched any interviews with him? He basically was like "I told my family I guess I'll try this whole running thing for a year or two before med school." The dude cares more about his turtle than his running career. I just don't see a guy like that risking his health for a few % performance boost.
Outkicks Yared the final 150m. Need evidence? Go look at him out class reigning world champion Jake Wightman. Don't want to here Wightman is coming back from injury. That 1:42 800m speed never leaves you.
In addition to the other indications that he was by no means capped in college, where he devoted his time to studying and didn't get too much sleep or have training partners or altitude, as he got as a professional in Colorado with Ritz and Oliver Hoare, Joe Klecker, Mario Garcia Romo and others, he also ran 3:43 behind Jakob. Not too many chances in track history to draft at that pace all the way in a mile, just twice, actually--El G's WR where Ngeny drafted to 3:43 and Jakob's 3:43.76 with Nuguse.

Wightman is not the reigning world champion for starters...Naguse is on another level than Kessler, though I am a fan of both. Would be shocked to see Kessler within a second of Yared.

You’re talking about a race that went through 1100m in 2:39.3, a 3:53.06 mile pace. Kessler ran the last 200 of that race in 26.87. No doubt impressive, but Nuguse closed in 25.94 in a 3:47.38 race last year.
That was Wightman’s first race in over a year, and he’s never run 1:42–his PB is 1:43.65. Still, he closed down on Kessler by 4 tenths in the last lap.
This makes it seem like I’m short-changing Kessler, which isn’t my intention at all. Watching his finish in Boston I was saying “Wow, this is phenomenal.” But the “evidence” for your prediction isn’t convincing.
Just a reminder, if he’s in the same mile shape as last year, he’ll be tough to beat:
Yared Nuguse smashed the American record and came within a second of breaking the indoor mile world record as he easily took the win in the men's Wanamaker M...

Then to remain objective, you guys gotta give the East Africans, N Africans, and Europeans the same benefit of the doubt as you’re giving him. And be suspicious of US runners competing on a team with a convicted doper.
Geez.

He ran 3:33.2 with a big kick in 2023 which is worth a smidge under 3:50 for the mile actually, so it’s more like a 6-second jump. Nuguse’s battles with injuries are pretty well-known. He also had well-known solo/championship performances that hinted at more potential in a fast race (NCAA titles, 3:34 in a prelim, 7:38 solo, 3:35 with 1:49 last 800). So that along with his academic focus at Notre Dame, move to altitude, more strenuous training are where people give him the benefit of the doubt.
So moving down from the 10000m to the 1500m under the coach of the Olympic Champion is not enough to explain a big leap at 23, but 'getting serious' is?
