And she ran a 2:34 at Grandma's according to WA page, and her record-eligible personal best is 2:38:20 (hey, that one I also have bested for a whole minute), so not sure why OP would call her a 2:36 marathoner

Sub-elite female runners (and she might even be actual 'elite', if not world class) are great. Like, you have a running team for some relay race at work, everyone running 5K or 7K legs, this is quite popular here in Germany. Guys who run 16-18 minute 5K are dime a dozen, but if you get a girl who can run 18, you dominate almost every event as a mixed team.

You don't have to be an elite runner to get prototype shoes. Heck you don't even have to be all that good or at all famous. I had a friend back in college that was a tester for Nike. He ran in several different prototype shoes and racing spikes and flats, specifically to give feedback. He was a DIII All-American.
