He beat every American Marathoner except Rupp on Feb 29, 2020 -that's how. Dude is currently still rebuilding from some massive injuries and just doesn't have enough time before the trials, but he can probably be pretty good for a fall 2024 marathon.
This comment is by a coach or agent. Already predicting failure but telling us how much better he will be come fall. Also probably trying to get a deal at Chicago or New York.
Lol you really think simply explaining how running works means someone is a coach or agent trying to work an angle?
If someone has a massive injury and can't train effectively it takes a long time to get fit again, yet if a talented person continues to train well and improve it's a fair assumption that they'll be pretty good again eventually.
I'm not trying to predict failure, nor sure how to contextualize failure/success in this case. If anything the failure for someone in this situation is getting injured however many months ago, and success is simply running up to whatever current fitness is at the trials and coming out of the race healthy.
The US Trials are geared toward elite hobbyjoggers, which is both awesome, and tragic.
Kiptum is going to run a legit sub-2 at Rotterdam, 700 Japanese guys run 2:08 or better every year, and we get excited when one of our guys runs near the women's world record time.

Kind of hard to argue with this.
To shed some more light on these comments 2023 was the first time in history that the 100th fastest men's marathoner in the world was under 2:07. (2:06:55 to be precise). Top ranking U.S. male was Connor Mantz at 2:07:47 at 160th in the world.
