A common misconception is that you necessarily need to increase your mileage to improve. That is not true.

Yes you can increase volume for a higher stimulus, but you can also keep the volume the same and increase intensity, speed etc.

Plus you don’t reach your potential with just one or two years of intense training, especially when you’re so young, the odds are he could still improve a lot even without adding any more stimulus.

As others have attested to here, it doesn’t sound like he runs that much volume. Yes, 70-75 mpw would seem to be at the high end for what most elite high schoolers do, but who cares even if he did run 90 mpw? Many of the greats like Hall and Ritz did. And what if they only ran one or two 90 mile weeks in summer but averaged more like 70?

The key is getting a lot of the training in on dirt. Like Kelvin Kiptum. High mileage on pavement and concrete is just inviting injuries and making one injury prone throughout a career. Lots of easy base miles on dirt, interspersed with some hard sessions is a recipe for success and growth.

I never did even close to 90 in high school and I wouldn’t recommend it, but, for the kid who has worked up to it and really wants to try it, I see no problem with it. Especially as an 18 year old.

just got done with a few 140 mile weeks all on concrete except for maybe 1 run each week... only issue I had was I got in the best shape of my life no injuries etc. soft surface is very overrated unless your only goal is cross country/trails.. my joints (especially ankles) twist a few times each one on gravel and much more on grass.. not worth hurting ligaments and tendons (which take much longer to heal than bones). just build mileage slowly on whatever surface you want to run on and you'll be fine. do it too quickly on any surface and you will be hurt. the reason Kenyan's run on dirt is because that is what the majority of roads are there (and yes I have been to Kenya though China is paving everything there)

Dude, why are world-class tracks not made of concrete, instead of exorbitantly expensive Mondo surfaces? Concrete would be much more durable and considerably cheaper, as a track surface, over its useful life.

Because tracks allow for wearing lighter shoes to maximize speed and reduce loss of energy due to slippage.

Why are marathon world record attempt only on roads? Wouldn't they be faster on dirt like you are insinuating?

So we're reading that this actually is either the XC or track coach at that school. I can tell you that my XC coach wouldn't have had any idea how much mileage I was putting in the other 45 weeks a year when he never saw me. In fact, I didn't speak to him a single time Senior year. My track coach wouldn't have recognized me or my name and given you a blank stare if you'd asked.

I tend to believe the poster saying this is the guy. That I do not dispute. I'm just not so sure he knows what this guy runs especially during the 1/3 or so of the year that school's out.

By the way, I did 70 and ramped it up occasionally. And I was not yet 17-1/2 when I graduated. Brad Hudson did 100. He may or may not be putting up big numbers, but it wouldn't shock or offend me if so.

The best 17 year old on the planet in 2023 running 3:33 and 7:52 avg around 55-60miles a week for the year. BTW no double thresholds. All his training is on Strava Cam Myers turns 18 in June 2024.

who cares about daniel simmons when the best daddy is at skyridge high school. mark my words, the likes of creed and davin are clearly better and will crush him in track. also easton allred has come back to hgih school at lehi and is lookig to tranfer to skyridge and will cook danny.

I stand by what I said. It’s much wiser to do high volume on dirt and grass, not rutted dirt, but dirt nonetheless. Especially for high schoolers. I don’t have an issue with the volume. If high school kids want to run 90-100 mpw, who am I to say don’t do that?

Daniel, Creed, and Davin will ALL be on the same team next year.

Easton Allred did go back to HS, but then he graduated from Lehi in 2023.

Runners improve in college because of continued physical maturation and other than injury risk, it doesn’t matter how many miles were run in HS.

As for the comments from posters about his diet, running 13:38 is 100% proof that he’s consuming everything he needs.
