Time to update this thread, I got busy with work/school/coaching and got behind on it.
This week my athlete did this:
Mon: 6x800m w/ 2:30 rest, 2x300m in:
2:34-2:41-2:38-2:40-2:36-2:32
39.1
41.6
Wed (today): 200m-600m-200m in:
27.6, 1:27.2, 25.6
On friday, I’m going to have him enter a mile seeded at 5:10, his goal is to sit in the pack and win the race, I think he’s in 4:40 give or take a couple seconds shape for the mile so it’s really “tempoing” 3 laps and then bringing it home. On Saturday he will be running 800m and I’ll be seeding him at 2:00. He ran a 2:07 last week on a crappy track with 1 shoe missing, so that, plus him crushing this weeks workouts tell me it’s time for him to break 2:00 or at least give it a good go. The 3 other boys in our training group are also doing very well, 2 guys are ready to go under 2:05 based off of todays workout, and another guy is ready to break 2:20, which is phenomenal considering he couldn’t break 1:30 in a 400m last year.
Im beginning to get the impression that the athlete i’ve been focusing on this season may shape out to be more of a 4x4 capable 800-3k stud than a 4/8 guy, he has great footspeed, will probably be the best 400m runner on the team this year, but he is doing extremely well on distance days for a guy with a 19:00+ 5k PB. I think he can run sub 10:30 for a 3200m right now, and although i’m not going to make him race one at this point I do think he will be a top scorer come XC season.
