Just curious... when was everyone else's state meet? Was it last Saturday? I know CA's was.
Exactly. The poor performance of California is most likely tied to the fact that last weeks California State Meet had very nice cool weather which produced some of the most fantastically fast times in California history. They were all toast for NXN.

They weren't all toast.

Put them in any conditions you want, Colorado and Utah will still come out on top this year. The 9 million people from those states are simply better than the 40 million in CA.

California is 2nd, Yes, this is imperfect measurement, but it shows either:
(a) If this was a really bad showing for California, they must be really good.
(b) Some of the boys were able to handle it OK, just not all.
The CA boys that did well were near the front from the start. Those boys that tried to start slow and move way up later, yes, they were toast.
Perez was in the front and faded mid point. Bell and Cohen were in the front for nearly the entire race and Parra made his way up after the 1st mile. The course was tough but that's a true cross country course for you.
Obvious troll but a few observations for serious posters:
I moved from the Midwest to so Cal in high school and was surprised no one raced CC in spikes on the west coast. We always wore them in the Midwest and ran courses (golf, grass, reservoirs, wood chip trails) they worked well on. No one wore them in Calli and understandably, the courses there were not suited for spikes; hard packed dirt and a little (or sometimes a lot) of cement. You also rarely race in cold/wet weather in So cal. It's the heat you have to deal with there much more than rain, wind, mud, etc. and it's hot all the way through Thanksgiving. I always felt like I had an advantage over the field when the weather got bad and the conditions were sloppy b/c of my midwestern roots. FWIW.
I have been looking at the NXN pictures and I have yet to find a picture of a California runner on a top team (dana hills, san clemente, great oak) wearing the correct spikes for a mud course. This is beyond stupid. Why didn't they just use the same spikes everyone else was using??

That (no spikes, lots of cement or hard packed dirt courses, not used to cold/wet weather) is not a west coast thing, that's just a California thing. That being said, I'm pretty sure California teams and athletes are able to wear spikes in out of state meets. And, as mentioned in this thread, there have been plenty of examples of California athletes faring well in the mud and/or cold, specifically at NXN, so while it's true that Californians are less acclimated to those conditions it doesn't mean they can't necessarily adapt and overcome.

You must be kidding me....
What are the correct spikes to wear in those conditions? Thanks!
