BU Performance Lists

I think a number of coaches/athletes submit times which are what they think their athletes are now capable of achieving. For example, Machu just placed 15th I believe in NCAA XC so one would think about 15:30 seems reasonable given the athletes she was close to. Hopefully the coaches are being realistic.

That is correct. Melissa Riggins for example submitted at 8:52... she is a 2:03/4:10 runner with no 3k/5k or long distance times outside of cross. If she is that fast now over 3k it is quite a leap. But, seems possible given her speed and performance during this XC season.

Still, a lot of times listed here under 8:57 and 15:30.

Would not the odds of a lot of these athletes getting a qualifier be better served in finding a smaller meet? Suppose you’re an athlete on-the-bubble, and you’re stuck in a pack running in lane 2 most of the race.

I understand why they do it, it just makes me laugh. Last year there were 22 athletes in the top heat of the 5k's. Machu's coach bumping her 5k by 30 seconds theoretically pushes Gracelyn Larkin out of the top heat who is listed at 13:32.50. The funny thing is Larkin has actually run the 13:29 (outside of the 1 year window, was 2022 outdoors) that Machu is listed at and beat her at Nationals. Does the coaches gut feeling justify Machu getting the shot to be pulled to a huge PB over someone else?

It just occurred to me, maybe the faster athletes should put in a terrible seed time!!

That way, they could run un-impeded on the rail with the slower athletes behind them. They wouldn’t have to waste energy in the beginning of the race in jockeying for position, nor get stuck in a pack.

That is a fair point. Last year some in the 2nd heat outperformed the top 5k heat.

Also, in the top heat - they won't all go with the pacing. Last year, Tuohy was the only collegian to really do so. So, there will be a second pack that will pace themselves anyways.

Oddly it doesn't work like that, about 66% of the 3000 and 5000 qualifiers will come from these specific races. A few from later bu meets, pro meets w/ collegians and a few from meets at Dempsey UW. Very hard to find other fast races.

What you keep repeating about this meet looks less conclusive. I think competition from other venues will be good for the athletes.

And if the track actually is short, that needs to be discovered/disclosed. Same with Milrose, for that matter.

This is the problem and the start of the races is a WWE slugfest. Either limit entries to a smaller number of heats with 12-14 athletes in each or suck it up and have many heats of 12-14.

my 2 cents is this meet gives athletes a chance to get a good time in before they take a break after a tough XC season. AR has some meets in Jan/Feb but they don't seem to be the right time for the fast times in distance races as they are too far ahead of Nationals in mid March. The mid Feb UW and BU meets are rally the next times the distance runners will try to go fast, andmany of them might want to qualify in 2 events, so 1 now and 1 later.

It isn't odd. All of the top runners are there. It is like saying the Boston Marathon course is fast because the times are so much faster than 90% of the marathons.

Anyone know what the maximum spike length is for the BU track? I can find nothing on the website.

Ah ok so you had to manually change it. That's funny. I'm definitely using that term from now on but only in running related occasions. About to sama on those guys.
