No he wouldn't. XC times are meaningless. At the B10 meet last week, there were guys with sub 14 5K PRs running over 25 minutes. I guess this guy would have beaten them.
SWAC you'd be excellent but that's HBCU. sun belt. bottom half of the big sky maybe. portland state you could walk right into but they had 5 runners at conference and i am wondering if they have any scholarships or are going to continue having a team, when they can barely field the minimum. back end of MAC. patriot league. SJSU, fresno state. just run conference meets through TFRRS and work your way up from the bottom.
i do agree with some of the posters on here that unless you are super lucky with this, it's the choice between making a weaker D1 vs. competing for conference and maybe making nationals D3.
to be fair i think you'd be competitive enough XC you're not the usual deluded wannabe walkon. i just think you're enough within the Venn Overlap where it's like do i want to be a dominant D3 or a rank and file guy on a weaker D1.
Hello, I am a juco runner in the state of Oregon with a 24:50 8k pr this season, and a sub 15 5k, 3:57 1500, 1:58 800, 31:40 10k last track season. I would like to go to a D1 school outside of Oregon but I'm unsure if my times would allow to walk on anywhere. Ignoring tuition costs, do I have a chance to transfer and walk-on to a D1 school, or should I stay in state and go to an Oregon school?
Hey dude, I came out of the NWAC from EvCC with similar times back in the early 2010s. I got walk-on offers from Montana and Idaho State (I limited my school search to the PNW to stay close-ish to home). Ultimately, I chose to go to an NAIA school because I valued team titles and big scholarship money over the prestige of saying that I was a D1 runner. I got to be a part of a team conference title and runner-up finish and a couple of top 10 finishes at nationals AND I finished my undergrad with no debt. Those things wouldn't have happened if I chased the D1 hype at a school that wasn't good. I finished up my college career with bests of 14:46 in the 5k, 30:49 in the 10k, and 24:22 in cross country and beat a ton of D1 guys in the process. Seriously though, don't get yourself in debt just to be a guy on a D1 team that doesn't accomplish anything or go anywhere. That is dumb and ultimately NOBODY CARES.
Go wherever gets you the best price financially, but has a running program that has performed well at the national or regional level. Don't worry about the division.
A lot of mixed info on here. I know for a fact a lot of DI programs would be interested. You have to look away from Northwest and West though. Don't bother with P5 level either.
Sub 25 would make the vast majority of mid major teams in the eastern half of the country better. You have to do some research and find a program with your major where you feel confident you can be top 5 and then reach out to coaches.
Some of those programs would be willing to invest a small scholarship and many state schools have JuCo transfer scholarships available.
And contrary to popular belief...there is nothing inherently special about expensive, obscure private schools. For the most part, the best schools are DI (especially in terms of value).
No. No. and no. His cross country time is a cross country time. His track times are slower than respectable high school times. Cross country times are not real. Only naive people rely on them. College coaches don't. He wouldn't be top 7 on a top 25 D3 team. Much faster high school kids don't get scholarships. Faster high school kids don't get walk-on spots. And they are 18 while he is already 2 years older. Encouraging these poeple gives every runner and parent false hope. College coaches hate dealing with people who think they are worth more than they really are.
You're an actual idiot. He wouldn't make top 7 on a top 25 D3 team? He has beaten the number one guy on a top 12 D3 by over a minute head to head. Twice this season.
The 12th ranked team is St Olaf. Their track times this year were 14:01, 14:15, 14:53, 14:54, 14:57. But somehow, a 15-minute guy would beat a 14-minute guy by 1 minute? Yeah. That makes sense. I don't know if Nico Young would beat a 14-minute guy by 1 minute.
i don't mean nationally. i mean in some conferenes. depends on your conference. in some conferences 1:50-something you'll be quite competitive through their season.
look, smaller brainier d3 conference i know of, he would be top 2 in this year's XC, and last year's 5k, 10k, 1500, finalist in 800. that's where i get "dominant" from. we can quibble about where he fits in a better conference (NESCAC, SCIAC, Liberty League) or nationally but he'd win some meets and potentially some conferences.
and the quibbling misses the point -- or perhaps makes it for me. i mean, what are you trying to argue, he shouldn't even bother with D3? there's no more "down" from there. i'm saying while his times might be walkon at some weaker D1, he's really more a D3 guy. my point with "dominant" is if he wanted conference glory some conferences he'd stand out. that he wouldn't dominate nationally, likely make nationals in TF, etc., you're just saying he's get down to it maybe a slightly above average D3 and not even a great one. ok, thanks for making my point to direct him that way.
