Whether it's an assault on your parkrun PB or getting your spikes on for a 5000m blast, who could be better to provide some words of wisdom than Jakob Ingebr...
cockiness is what sold so many PPV buys at certain UFC events. the only problem with cockiness in general is when it comes to the blurred line between acceptable cockiness and going too far. if he continues with these cocky comments, he's eventually going to say something that will piss someone off and result in him getting cancelled by some individuals.
I agree with you, I think some of it is just to make the sport more interesting for fans too which should be appreciated by all.
Jakob is reminiscent of CR7 to me (disclaimer: my favorite athlete), and to be honest I think Jakob has taken some inspiration from him.
He has said similar things to what you link many times in the past. For instance, he mentioned how he will never collapse after a race because it makes him seem vulnerable to his competitors.
I think almost all generational great athletes think similarly in this way, look at Kipchoge for example. The way they express it to the public just varies, which in Jakob or CR7s case, it can come off as cocky at times, but in Kipchoge's it comes off as profound. Personally, I respect cockiness a lot when its backed up. Mentality is important when youre pushing into unstamped territory, it could be easy to get complacent or let the pressure get to you, knowing that all your competitors have a target on your back, and the whole world has such high expectations.
“Cocky” is a slippery term. In excess and with obvious dramatic shows of disdain and exaggeration it’s hard to stomach. Superiority complex kind of thing. But when it’s justified pride backed w performance and basic sportsmanship it can even be endearing (Cassius Clay, H. Bolt.) JI is not flamboyantly cocky imo, and he shows respect fr other athletes. I mean there’s even a good kind of cholesterol, so give the kid some slack.
So I spend my time here relentlessly trumpeting my achievements? I thought I was discussing Jakob, like the rest of you. I suppose it is too much of an expectation that you would understand anything being discussed here - including my comment you so feebly responded to.
See clip. For those without instagram he basically says “If you’re going to be better than everyone else you need to act like you’re better than everyone else”

I don’t think he’s cocky, I think he’s confident. If you know your fitness level and what competitors are in the race, you have a pretty good sense of where you’ll finish, unless you have a bad day (which you don’t think about). False humility isn’t genuine. It’s easier to be the favorite but be wishy-washy “we’ll see…” versus committing and stating you expect to win.
I used to be in a road racing circuit and based on my workouts and who was there I usually knew if I’d be top 5 or 10 etc. Most people did.
If you’re confident, you expect things to work out a certain way when you do the work. Why wouldn’t you, you have a high level of control?!

George St Pierre, who's a 12x world champ, in his prime was able to sell out PPVs without needing to talk trash.
UFC welterweight Dan Hardy opens up with his thoughts on reigning UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in a recent interview on "The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast.
I don't think it's anything deeper than he's very good and that's just who he is. It's not unusual for very good athletes to be arrogant, it's just that some have more charm than others so they're more likeable. Jakob is more like a villain type, like Ivan Drago, Novak Djokovic, Cristiano Ronaldo, or Chris Froome. But he's no more arrogant than Bolt, Muhammad Ali, Warholm, or Leo Messi. Those guys just have more charm and charisma so their arrogance comes off better
Jakob is a league or two below Ali, Messi and Bolt. And still a bit more arrogant than each of them, with the exception of Ali, maybe. But PPV boxing sales are dependent on showmanship and boasting/trash talk so it's not a fair comparison

Yeah I agree. This is an extremely level headed, modest response. It gives creedence to that you only want people to behave courteously to each other.
Honestly I think if he won every race he wouldn’t be as vocally arrogant as he is. Obviously still internally. But I think his insecurity after losing the few times that he has since Tokyo (DL final in 2021, Wightman, Kerr) amplifies his need to vocally assert he is the best.
Jakob is not insecure and he's not going to change with age. The clips of him 10+ years ago are evidence of that.
The best aspect by far is the spontaneity. None of this stuff is scripted. He has a remarkably quick mind and can do a ton with a handful of words, even in not his native language. That's where, "Just the next guy," and "Just stay as close as possible to me...," come from.
He lost a coveted world championship race a month ago. Threads here were proclaiming the cliche devastation. Meanwhile Jakob used the 2000 world record to fully restore the swagger already, to the point his detractors are already desperate for a season ending defeat.
I wish somebody would ask Jakob about Laros, asking if he views him as a threat. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. I don't know how Jakob would handle that, if he'd assign an ounce of different category maybe or brashly dismiss. I think there would be some respect. Prodigies generally acknowledge each other.

Jakob has a "remarkably quick mind"? Guess you have a low bar for intelligence.
It's both. There IS a difference and obviously he... well, I think he is more direct as a result of his culture, that's just my take on it, feel free to disagree. But he also is arrogant. Those two things - they're not mutually exclusive.
Americans are so used to being handled with care by customer service that anything said that doesn’t try to make the recipient feel good or want to buy something is considered arrogant. How dare he not care about my feeling when he talks? Doesn’t he think that I am important?!?
Defending 5K World Champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen had to turn on the afterburners in the final lap of his bid to repeat in Budapest, where he was able to run do...

never heard anyone say Americans ARE NOT as egocentric as the rest of the world until now. this is comedy gold. you jakob worshippers will make up anything to feed into your sad delusion.
Petter Northug was a very succesfull norwegian cross country skier between 2007 and 2015. He had a few olympic golds and 13 golds in world cup. His cockiness far exceeds Jakobs cockiness. That kind of cockiness by Petter is not very usual in Norway, but he became probably the most popular athlete in Norway at that time, and added some entertainment to the sport by his personality. Jakob was 7-15 years old when Petter was at his best, and I think he may have learned something from him.

Interesting, I didn’t realize good sportsmanship was an American concept. They don’t teach you guys how to be respectful to others and how to be a decent human being in Europe?
