I don't think she is devastated at all. The only way she would be actually devastated is if she truly cared and really wanted to win the race.
I think this was actually a super impressive medal - it's hard to go to a worlds that you don't want to be at (and were probably forced to by your sponsor) and walk away with some hardware.
Why would she not want to be there?
Has been told by her coach that she has bigger fish to fry.
Wasn't 800 race ready.
Wants be a model.
Didn't match well with doping cycle.
There can be so many reasons... but clearly Kersee hadn't planned for her to be there and she didn't look comfortable or confident.
she stayed on outside of lane 1 to make moraa run wider around the turn, which was smart
should've gone back to inside of lane 1 to block hodge, but she could prob tell she didn't have the gas to hold off moraa anyway and was just thinking about the win, not trying to get 2nd so much
A kenyan here.
THis is very simple.
It is SO SIMPLE THAT EVEN A CAVEMAN CAN SEE IT.
MARY MORAA IS A FORCE OF NATURE.
That is what happened!
I knew Moraa was going to win it.
As soon as Mu was overtaken, she had no more interest in anything else. Her morale went down and everything disintegrated.......including securing Silver.
She wanted gold. She loses it and then, things fall apart.
It happens.
ON a different note, the commentators acted like they didn't know who Moraa was until about 250 metres to go.
They even said that it was shocking........Moraa's win.
I don't understand how an athlete at this level can routinely make this mistake.
She was trying to block by forcing Moraa to go around
This is idiotic. She is not forcing Moraa to give her any more space. No matter where Mu runs Moraa is going to try to pass at the exact same axial distance (distance from the center of the turn). So she's forcing Moraa to go extra distance by going extra distance herself? Seems to me that if someone is gaining on you it's in your best interest to shorten the race and give them less time to pass.

1) how do I know this? - hmmm, her coach literally said they were contemplating vacation vs competing then she turned up looking miserable the entire time which wasn’t just noticed by many people on this messageboard but also the NBC commentary team
2) I have no idea as to why exactly - that’s not really the point and they are different conversations. So I don’t speculate on that at all - it’s her business.
Make $200,000/yr from running. Train hard everyday, race highly stressful international competition, stick to a strict diet, have people jab at you online, have a 5-10yr career life, post to instagram, be an image for a company.

Moraa also runs on the outside of lane one. Just watch the semi. One difference is that she tends to use her elbows and a bit of weaving to protect her space. In this case, Mu had to get out harder than she wanted to be able to keep Moraa from playing her games, namely, getting to the lead in 26 mid to 27 mid, slowing it down to 31, 30-31, holding the lead and then pulling ahead at the end, but it just left Mu weak and she still left the inside open to be pushed back into the bronze medal. I don't think that Kersee was the evil person here except in pushing her to the 1500m instead of the 400m. He went public because she wasn't willing to compete (remember when she didn't even know she was placed in a 1500m (Sir Walter Raleigh?) and refused to do it) and this was his only way of exerting pressure on her to compete at World's.
“Lane 2 Mu” runs the race with a wide open gap from the rail and gets passed on the outside by Moraa, then by Hodgkinson on the inside. Devastating!
Did anyone else think the 800 race sequence at the WC played out for Mu the same way the 1500 played out at the NCAA's for Tuohy.
-Heavy favorite gets jostled a lot in the prelim to the point of appearing upset afterwards. -Comes back in the finals and runs first lap way too fast to avoid getting caught in the traffic again (they both said this in interviews afterward - that avoiding the physical pack was on their minds) -burns out and gets passed in the homestretch.
If I am a runner hoping to upset a favorite, it seems like getting physical in the prelim is a good way to get in their head and get them to run an impulsive final.
Similar. But in both cases part of the issue was just not having it and being in vulnerable position as a result. The commentators were concerned about Mu's position in the semis before she was tripped up.
