The best HS distance coach in history and brought back UCLA from the dead. He will land someplace soon. I’m sure he will be more picky on his next choice though.
I’m betting we see in with a pro group or his own. It’s definitely more his personality.
This is exactly what I was thinking. You can love him or hate him, but the truth is he can coach and will get the program attention and fast at the same time.
Are any of you sad that Sean Brosnan no longer coaches UCLA?
I don't personally care for what I've seen of his personality, but I do feel somewhat bad for the athletes he recruited in the past year. I know that there's always the possibility that a coach doesn't get renewed or takes a different job, but it still must be a bummer for athletes like McDonnell, Barnett, Frias, Cantu, etc. to make a commitment or transfer decision thinking they're signing up for one coach/training system and then to have that quickly switched up on them.
I know some people might say, "well, he only got those transfers in the first place due to shady business, which got him fired" but I'm just some random fan with no insider information about what went down between Brosnan, the athletes, and any other coaches or administrators. I really can't speak to how closely he was toeing the lines of acceptable recruiting, so I won't try to.
I don’t think that Harvard needs the extra publicity. They are also already one of the top mid distance programs (17th at NCAA XC)
UC Berkeley and UCSB certainly meet the “decent” Academics criteria (more so than the 3 Universities that I mentioned). I would actually say that Berkeley is not decent, but exceptional.
Both would certainly benefit by having Brosnan. I am thinking however that Berkeley may be too strong academically and that would limit who he could get. It would take him longer to build the program.
No. Isn't it obvious that he just chose UCLA so that he could still be close to the Newbury Park kids while gaining college experience? He'll find somewhere better, everybody who isn't a jealous hater knows he's a legit coach.
Yeah, truthfully - I am. There are very few coaches with his passion, portfolio, and confidence in what they're doing with young athletes. It's UCLA's loss, they could have just gave him a slap on the wrist, but all of the other coaches were scared of him and complained, honestly... All of the athletes he was recruiting from other schools would have been better off under Brosnan.
You need a reminder. Newbury Park won multiple official and unofficial national xc titles with record scores and margins. Nico Young ran 7:56.97 in a shortened COVID season and two NXN titles. Leo Young ran 3:38-9 and got 16th at World Junior XC. Lex Young ran 7:57/13:34 HSR. Colin Sahlman ran 1:48 low/3:56 and won the RunningLane national championship. Aaron Sahlman ran 1:48/4:01 as a junior and won NXN as a senior. Jace Aschbrenner ran 8:44. A handful of others broke 9.
Yes he did a great job developing his high school runners. College coaching requires listening to the head coach and AD. It especially requires following rules. There are a bunch of administrative things that coaches must do even though they don't enjoy it. He broke rules which gets a school in trouble. That is worse than doing nothing.

I think UCLA was fully aware of Brosnan’s capability to work wonders, that’s why they hired him. This situation leads me to suspect possible retaliation from other schools was a factor. There are other sports.
This is true the programs of UVA, Alabama, and Duke all went in to cause destruction. It’s amazing the NCAA even looked at this case. However, blue blood schools get special treatment. If North Dakota State reported nothing would happen. A total nothing case but broader agenda was to put enough discomfort on AD’s in order for them to cut Brosnan because they don’t want to deal with it. A lot of people hurt from the action of the blue bloods.
