Haha I feel like we had this exact discussion about 5 weeks ago prior to Oslo no?
He doesn’t have the anaerobic power of El G to be running under 40 seconds for the final 300m and he just closed out his current PR in 40.32. It’s hard to imagine that even with some improvement left he can better that considerably going through 1200m 1.2 seconds quicker. It’s not his strength anyway - his strength literally is his strength. I actually wonder if he is going to have forgo some speed in that final 300 and set up the pace more in the first 1200m to do it - especially as he does get older and presumably even stronger. Like I don’t believe we just say “well low 40s is what he finished with in Silesia so just work back from 3.25.90 with that as his final 300 and we get 2.45.6/7 as his 1200 split”.
My personal opinion is that he still needs to be more in the lower to flat 2.45s to do it. I think he needs to be just under 1.50 or in the low 1.50s through 800m. We saw El G in all of his best races (the sub 3.26.5s) hit 800 in the 1.50’s and even with his ability to change up gears (better than Jakob) he couldn’t break that 3.26 barrier. It’s a big jump from 3.27.1 to 3.25.9 - I don’t think it can be run the same way.
Just my opinion, 54.8, 55.0, 55.3, 40.8
54.0-55.95-55.95-40.0
70, 70, 70, -4.1
