Nevertheless, any guy regardless of height running sub-4 @ 200 lbsl is remarkable - and almost to the point of unbelievable. 😲
6'2" but I googled him and I doubt very much he weighed 200 lbs or anything within 40 lbs of it. He looked scrawny as heck.
Exactly...I couldn't find anything on his weight either. And on the images I saw of him in his racing gig - he didn't look heavier than a buck 60. Lol
I kinda thought that was phony from the get go. I don't think most runners here understand just how big 200 lbs is on an elite distance runner - let alone running fast enough to break sub-4 in the mile.
There's no legitimate 200 lb runner that ever broke sub-4 in the mile...period.
So, it's looks like the award for the heaviest dude to break 4 goes to Paul McMullen & Andrew Wheating - both at 175. 🙌
I'll go one step further & break the tie giving it McMullen - who was quite a bit shorter that Wheating (6-2 vs 6-6).
This is interesting on McMullen. He played TE on the football team weighing around 200 during the season. It says he had to dropped 25 lbs for the track season...crazy.
Paul McMullen was not a star coming out of high school, in fact he attended Eastern Michigan with just a $600 scholarship at first, but he made the most of his chance. Having been a successful football player in high school P...
I just watched a few videos of Paul McMullen (who, sadly, passed away a couple years back). He was a beast! Thin by comparison to the average weight lifter, but to think he ran sub 4 with that much body mass is really impressive.

Paul McCmullen was a beast. While he may have gotten down to 175 in peak form, I imagine he could still break 4 around when he got up to 190ish pounds.
A stellar field lines up for the 1988 Dream Mile in Oslo, providing the crowd with a fast race, and an exciting, close finish, with 1987 World 1500 meter Cha...
Snell was also running on dirt tracks with like 1inch long spikes. What a beast. He ran 1:44 800m on a grass track this performance likely more impressive than current WR by Rudisha.
Chris Solinsky (172 lbs - 3:57.89) *Before his weight loss in 2010, he admitted to weighing an additional 10 lbs*
Nick Symmonds (165 lbs - 3:56.72)
I always wondered if Nick Bare could do it with the 190-195 lbs he ran his Sub-5 in. I know it's a dumb question but, I remember in the Batman comics. He and Robin are capable of running Sub-4 despite Batman weighing 210 lbs and being able to bench 1000 lbs.
Anyhow, any legends y'all can source? Heavier Distance guys are always a W.
Eric Holt definitely lies in the 165-175 range, and has been upwards of 190 during his career.

This is what I was going to say. Sure I’m not one to hold back accusing people of doping but there is no way in hell that Nick Bare is clean. You cannot look like that with huge traps, striation, etc year round natty
so even if he does run a fast mile I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s on the sauce
From Snell's vO2Max test at San Diego State College in 1965 - vO2Max 72.3
Snell was 26.6 years old, 179.8 cm tall, and weighed 76.0 kg. Overall, the changes in Snell’s measurements over a 5 year period were negligible and seem to be within reasonable measurement error However, there was a decrease in weight of 1.7 kg between 1%0-1%5 and while this may not be considered unusual it may have been due largely to dehydration associated with the subject’s intestinal problem as disclosed in the medical examination.
