They're expecting a bunch of 4:5x female runners to hold hands and sing Kumbaya when they don't make the travel team? This is not going to end well. I'm calling it now: heartache, drama, and transfers out by the end of the year. Call me a cynic!

Public records requests report Texas A&M athletes received ~$4M in NIL with 80% going to football and men's basketball. That leaves about $800,000 left to spread around.
I imagine the amounts are only going to get larger as the NIL collectives mature. The 12th Man+ fund just launched in February 2023 and allows small donors to give small amounts Patreon style.

Interesting! I know a girl who committed to Texas A & M for next year. I wonder if the NIL is what swayed her opinion, it looked like she was highly sought after. Though I don't know the exact details of what they offered her compared to other schools.

There are basically 2 kinds of NIL at the moment:
1- real nil deals with companies, where very good athlete's are paid by companies in exchange for providing services
2- dummy NILs where the contract may never even be fulfilled and just works as a way to funnel alumni/booster cash to athletes. This is mostly for football and basketball, but some schools like lsu, Miami and Tenn are making smaller budgets available to second tier sports.

Athletes should be paid whatever the market will bare. The whole idea that they shouldn’t be paid was just another system of control by those in power so that funds could be funneled elsewhere. Including multimillion dollar salaries for coaches.
What wasn’t fair was restricting this in the same way as the Olympics used to be amateur. No one would suggest that companies shouldn’t be able to pay top dollar for the best talent. There is no reason this should be different.

Alston isn't NIL but it's similar. Some court ruling (Alston ruling) has allowed up to $6000 for 'educational needs' without defining what educational needs are exactly. Schools with big budgets can afford to give that up to $6k others less yet others $0. Seems totally fair and balanced just like college sports was intended! ;)

Or the ncaa will get around to stopping random donations not tied to a specific recipient for their specific NIL.

And for the person who said guys love a big team... huh? You like racing your friends not other teams, huh? No, it's more like everyone thinks they'll be in the top 7... of course, that isn't possible but they don't think that far in advance.

At the moment there is little effort by the NCAA to regulate, and since there is no NCAA policy, the legal regulations are now done on a state by state basis. Naturally, it will end up w 50 slightly different state laws. It's really the wild west at the moment.

At first I assumed he was either a Freshman or Sophomore. You can leave the academies during either of your first two years without any commitment. Once you report to school for your Junior year, a military commitment becomes required.
However, I looked at his bio from Navy and it lists 2022-2023 as his Senior season. Sometimes a new graduate can get into a graduate school right away and incur a longer commitment, for example, medical school. So I looked at the Tennessee website and it lists him as a Freshman!

Lolz, on track team roster he's listed as grad student. I'd assume he got permission to defer service and will be grad student at Tenn.

Ok, that changes things quite a bit. It seems here that he's just at Tennessee for a graduate degree and its just showing him as a freshman on the roster for some reason. Or maybe, but I highly doubt this, he got a deal with the Navy to carry out his service by representing the Navy through his athletics like Chelimo did with the Army or like some of the recent USAFA grads. Still think that's very unlikely though.

No, NIL isn't "fair." It's also not fair that women born pretty get their pick of men in the dating world. It's also not far that men who have higher earning careers, get the pick of women in the dating world. Life isn't fair.
