Yeah he ran a lot of the first 400 in lane 2 - slightly better positioning there and might have been different. He did look super strong when challenged with 110 to go - he's a tough competitor.
problem was I think the group went a bit too fast the first 200, so he couldn't get to the front in that massive crowd away right without some sacrifice that might have limited the result, but leading to having to run farther
His time of 3:34.64 is worth 1180 points plus 40 points for a Group D win=1220 points, raising his 5 race average to 1203 (1202.6) points, which puts him for the time being around 48th on the Road to Budapest list.
Massive respect for him doing that. Going to some random meet in Italy to chase the standard shows so much desire. That was a gutsy run in a stupidly crowded field. I hope he gets to Budapest.

56 athletes go in the 1500, so he's in. He'll keep running though, as standard always better
I haven't looked closely at the guys in the 50-70 range, but for those who haven't run in their national championships, that's where the bonus points come in handy.
In an ideal world, Joe goes to Monaco or London for the DL points, but you can bet he's not getting in and/or some agent(s) will play games with the meet directors. Someone said Lucerne, and I'll agree with them.
Dumb question, but are Americans really bad at distance running or are the standards absurdly difficult? You never see anyone trying to make a standard in sprints or field events in order to go to worlds.

Standards are more difficult and there’re few fast races in the US at 1500. Even bleaker for collegiates unless they get into a BU race that is properly paced.
Thought Sound running had a race next weekend. Set up the 1500 with limited entries, with the focus on getting standard. Only those in need, with some extras, get in that section. Not 20 bodies!! Get Sowinski to pace it for a km or get the whole Washington team to help - Lumb needs it as well. Should only be a handful of finishers by the end, all trying to break 3.34.

Plus we’re really good at sprints, so the top 3 in sprints at our championships are almost guaranteed to have the standards. That doesn’t mean we’re bad at distance running; we’re one of the best distance running countries in the world.

Wow, there are 15 posts of excuses on here, if Waskom is running 3-4 in lane 1 or 2..the fractions were better than U.S, Champs by a ton. He ran what he ran, good lord, someone wants to give him 3:33..if he ran 40.8 coming in he runs 3:33.9 or so , certainly the Q'er. He did not, stop the insanity. The size of field was NOT the problem if he positioned correctly from jump street, if he does, he goes right to top 3-5 including pacer, closes in 40.5-.8 and runs under 3:34.00
Need to set up a race at UW similar to the one BTC did on Nike's campus just to get their guys the 5K standard.
Not going to happen. World Athletics has to have the meet on its calendar 60 days before the meet happens. That's one of the things WA is trying to eliminate with the rankings system--the pop-up meets where people suddenly qualify for a meet.
