I understand why American fans would want to see Burns in the fast heat, but it's a bit surprising to see that the race directors put him in there. Guys like Olin Hacker (13:19 SB/PB), Jackson Sharp (13:26 SB/PB), and Nassim Hassaous (13:26 SB/PB) are in the B heat.
I know, I saw that, too. I was a little surprised.

I actually think if they ran a 5k national championships he gets 5th at best.
32nd at NXN. 3rd - 5th at most of the big meets.
Well, I'm not his parent or coach or anything, but I think he had a particularly off race for NXN. He was 2nd at the Midwest Regional, and then a bunch of guys beat him at NXN who he had previously beat the week before, if that makes sense: Kole Mathison, Benne Anderson, Connor Ackley, Aden Bandukwala, Dan Watcke. I just don't think it was a good day for him. happens to the best of us!
Plus, he even says himself that he's more of long distance guy. So, if he gets 4th at the NON mile race - he admits that he does better at the farther distances.

Looks like Mcgorty is there, so he'll definitely be looking to have the pace pushed to get the American Standard.
Oh, I missed him. You're right. IIRC the Stumptown meet was a warm day.
Oh. I of course know that NXN was an off day. I added it just to pile on a bit.
But even 2nd in his regional is underwhelming. He was a sub 4 as a junior and a 13:37 dude now. And I don’t think he’s won a single race outside of his state.
To be honest, I wouldn’t be terribly bothered if he got the record. It just doesn’t seem fitting when you’re experiencing it real time.
He announced he was gonna go to Europe to chase 13:20s after he broke the record the first time. I said it a few weeks ago, but if I had the opportunity to do a Europe trip after my senior year, I'd have absolutely done it. If I got to run some races, it would've just been a cherry on top. If I got to break a national record in one of those races, it'd be a cherry on top of the cherry on top.
Idk if this is a hot take, but I think more HS kids should do what Burns is doing. A post-HS Europe trip is way better than a post-HS national meet like Birnbaum did imo. I'm taking Europe over Eugene every single day of the week tbh.
it's the same quarter system (approx) as U of Chicago, one of the best universities in the world. I wouldn't judge a school based on how they schedule their classes - not saying that UO is anywhere near U of Chicago, but the schedule shouldn't matter. https://www.uchicago.edu/en/education-and-research/academic-calendar#nav-current
Where do these kids get the mo ey to travel & race all over the country & Europe? That's just crazy. And how does a H.S. kid even get I to a meet in Europe without an agent🤔

His dad is a former college coach at Mizzou. He coached when Karissa Schweitzer was a runner there. I'm sure he has connections.

Privilige. Same privilege that lets these kids fly across the country all track season and not have to work or do anything else all spring/summer.
Looks like Mcgorty is there, so he'll definitely be looking to have the pace pushed to get the American Standard. Might give Burns a chance to see if he can hang on for sub 13:30
His last 5K, nobody had any interest in running fast and it paced high 13's.
Correction: World Standard = 13:07.
McGorty's teammate Kieran Tuntivate also entered.
As is one Narve Gilje Nordas . . . Gjert Ingebrigten's now-famous 3:29/1500 pupil who comes in with a 13:15 pr . . .
McGorty hitting the 13:07 world standard would be crisp and clear. Another 13:25 would, however, probably get him in on world points. Field of 42 w/ semi-final.
In the 10k, he's currently at spot 28 for a field of 27, so he needs 1 to scratch.
The purpose of running competitively is to race. He should take as many chances to get the record. It's no small feat to hold a highschool national record.

You know so little about this sport. It is shocking. Youngsters please do not listen to this poster.
