I am sort of an unbiased poster but I do find myself rooting for Tuohy on the behalf of the greater good of the sport.
I have a deep relationship with running and when I run I think about Tuohy. She and others give me topics to think about on my runs and I will forever be thankful because of that. I source them for energy.
That said, she is nowhere near done. I havent even seen the result yet due to the disarray in this delivery of results.
So I will state 110% blindly she isnt done.
LMAo at the second paragraph. I don't think about Tuohy on my runs really, but I'm rooting for her!
I think about normal things on my runs like Taylor Swift and Jonah Hill.
Placing 7th is an amazing achievement, she beat top pros with world championship standard. Closed the 2nd-fastest. All those without altitude training like the rest of the field.
Said in the "Touhy goes home devastated thread". It's amazing how when you throw the unnecassary expections out and actually look at the stats, you see she performed well today.
She ran fine. She was clearly feeling a little burnt out by nationals so for her to recoup and get 7th was good. All 6 runners that beat her have ran 14:31-14:52 with the except of Morgan who ran an 8:30 3k this year. She actually beat several runners with faster PB's who didn't have to go thru a full collegiate season and train at sea level year round.
a lot of those other runners ran to try making the world team. they took big risks that didn't pan out. Kelati and Infield were way ahead of Tuohy and then died.
Tuohy ran for 7th place and got 7th place. it was a chicken's race. Kelati ran for 3rd and barely got outkicked by Tuohy (for 7th place).

The "big risk" that the 2 of them, 14:50-14:52 runners, apparently took was going thru 3000 at 9:01.

There’s of course some truth to this but it doesn’t mean Tuohy ran poorly in any way. These runners are at different points in their careers with different circumstances. For Tuohy it was most important to run a solid race that she could feel good about after NCAAs, and avoiding overcooking herself mid-race was critical to that goal. For a 33 year old vet like Infeld of course she had to go all in on trying to make the team.
Tuohy’s race wasn’t a disappointment and it wasn’t amazing either. By the standard she’s established, it O.K./solid/pretty good. It was much better than NCAA outdoors, basically on par with her 15:03 (time trial) PR and not as impressive as her 8:35 at Millrose. Hard to compare it with XC and NCAA indoors given the difference in competition. Contextually, it was nice to end the track season on an upswing.
As a fan I’d like to see her go pro now. The more time she has to train with a pro group and live that lifestyle before the Olympic Trials, the better chance she has of jumping to a different level. We practically never see American collegiate women competing for spots on teams, but we often see top collegians make significant progress in their first year or two as pros.
She's the returning xc champ, and set the collegiate 3k record just this February. How is her stock down?
In fact the past few months is the only bit of weakness I think we've ever seen in her running and she still took 7th in the entire United states. That is remarkable for a 21 year old going against other pros with years more of elite level training.
Really impressed with her performance.
It was ok - but hardly "done" especially with her strong close (2nd fastest last 200 in the field I believe) so she was not staggering in like she was back in May.
When the 7th place finisher has the 2nd fastest last 200 and finishes 24 seconds behind the winner it means they did not run an efficient or effective race.

She seems in decent spirits after the race, acknowledges she had a little too much left, sounds like XC in Fall is pretty much a sure thing
Really….. excuses now. Y’all blindly discuss her during NCAAs like she is Pro caliber when she isn’t. Not saying she won’t be. But you don’t elevate others that already are.
She ran a really good race. 15:15 is a good time. She was only 1 second behind Whitney Orton-Morgan, and she beat Weini Kelati. She was only 7 seconds behind Elly Henes. She did great in a stacked field of pros, who I remind you, have been living the life of pro runners. Tuohy has been living the life of a full time student-athlete. While all of these women were enjoying an off season, Tuohy was running an undefeated xc season. While these women have had days filled with training and recovery, Tuohy has had training, recovery, AND a full time course load. This is not making excuses - it is just stating facts. When Tuohy goes pro, and she only has 2 seasons and nothing but running to worry about, she will no doubt move to another level. College athletes that are coming off 3 full seasons and a full year of school are at a big disadvantage at this meet. Tuohy held her own. 7th in this field is very respectable. She did good.
She’s studying business at NC State let’s not get carried away like she’s taking electrical engineering at MIT or something

The fact remains that after college runners can dedicate almost all of their time to their craft. Even at NC State there are classes to attend, and some studying for tests. And 3 seasons of races to try to run at a high level.

Last day of school was in April, so she's had 2 months of pro life to be ready for today.
7th at usatf quite promising for an NCAA runner. I'm sure not what she hoped for though.
Now a nice break. Then plan out '24 and get ready for xc.

Tuohy - 7th, Wiley 5th against better competition.
Tuohy wasn't even the fastest wolf pack runner in the race.
Finishing 7th at usatf is the definition of pro caliber, just as 5th is for Wiley, or 8th in 200 for Brahe-Pederson etc.
she made a big mistake not going pro. her stock is going down.

The NCAA runner that fell and then won the steeple is much more impressive than her and I wish he got three threads right now instead of all this hype about Touhy. He is exciting, she was a let down here and at NCAA's. Let's have some love sent over his way.

insecurity is a disease
you cant teach ppl to like or unlike someone, if your idol dont have the stats, story pr character ppl like, they wont like her or him.

Congrats! You’ve officially written the creepiest thing I’ve read on this website! Where should I send your medal?
Not to knock her or anyone else in this race but you have to see things from a global perspective--21 is not that young--I am sure there are sub 14:30 and sub 30:00 runners around who are 21 or younger. Gidey ran 44:20 15 K at 21 which nobody has come close to. If medaling is the ultimate goal, we need to be more worried about we stack up against global competition per age cohort.
Laura Muir was a full time vet or vet student when she was in the running for medals for the UK and Tony Sandoval won the Olympic trail marathon a long time ago as a full time medical student. School can be a negative distraction but may not necessarily prevent you from being world class--probably a lot easier than trying to juggle training around a 9 to 5 job.

There were NCAA athletes in just about every event and some even made the US team. Stop acting like Tuohy has it so much harder than everyone else.
