For men, 45 is when you really start to "deteriorate". Up until then, the changes are minor and pretty subtle. In your 20s, you think about sex 99.7% of the time. In your late 30s, it is down to 97.4% of the time. Physically, you can do most of what you were able to do in your 20s when you are in your 30s. You just start to see a decline in the endless energy you had in your 20s. But once you hit 45, eyesight goes regardless of whether you always had 20/20. It gets harder to make it through 8 hours of sleep without having to pee. Soft tissue starts losing elasticity making explosive movements more difficult and getting up off the floor eventually becomes a chore. Skin sags. You only think about sex 93.2% of the time. Metabolism flatlines.
For women, they actually hold on to physical fitness and ability longer because they do not rely on testosterone like men do. But much of what makes women attractive to men physically are just fertility markers. So, when women get into their mid 30s, everything starts to sag, hair goes gray or loses soft/silkiness, lips lose fullness, etc.
It's pretty much individualized & based a lot on your lifestyle.
For men, testosterone levels start declining after age 30, on average, at about 1% per year. Testosterone is the golden hormone for men. It not only gives us our muscularity & strength, but our vitality, assertiveness & well-being.
I'm 62 and according to the average rate of decline, I have about 30% less testosterone flowing in blood stream then I had at my peak youth levels 30 yrs ago.
And man do I feel it! 😬 Despite eating a 100% organic whole foods diet, getting plenty of rest & working out 7 days a week (cardio & weight training), I can no longer increase lean muscle mass & I struggle losing BF. I'm tired a lot of the time, my recovery from hard workouts is poor, I experience more joint & back soreness, I'm prone to injuries, my libido isn't all that great & I find myself moody & depressed more often than not.
Actually, the decline starting in my early 50s & seems to accelerate with each passing year. And I don't want go on TRT...just yet. But with the hormonal decline, aging is one tough beast to face up to every day.
I’m a guy and I have never heard any other man claim that women in their mid-30s are more sexually attractive than women in their 20s. A woman in her mid-30s may have a stronger sex drive than a younger woman but the average mid-30s woman is definitely not as attractive as the average woman in her 20s.
And you wonder why people say Letsrun.com is toxic. Never change, letsrun.com. Never change.
If men could always bed 21 year olds, Viagra would go off the market.
From what my guy friends have told me, women don't peak in sexual attractiveness until their mid-30's. We have a larger window than men, who peak earlier.
I know many men in their mid/late 20's that have already started to go bald or get grey hairs or wrinkles.
It also varies by race to some degree.
Those people all lied to you.
Women peak in their 20's.
Men peak in the 30's into their 40's.
"Men age like wine. Women age like milk."
I'm sorry but that's not my experience. As a bisexual woman, I have observed that typically men lose their looks before women do. I'm in my early thirties, and most of the women I went to high school with still look much the same, whereas the men mostly are getting beer guts and looking rough. Women try harder longer because they're more looks-conscious. By the time many men realize their metabolisms are slowing and things are going downhill, they're well down it.
Listen, you guys. This is a running site so I will tell you deterioration happens around 47/48 for both sexes, all genders. My warm-up if I do it right takes longer than my run.
I am 52. I quit running at 39 because my body was just falling apart. I've gained and lost some weight over the years, but stabilized around 175 at 6'0". I've been a vegetarian for 25 years.
I have a strong libido and still get morning wood. I do have some hair loss, which I have yet to do something about. Pills, I suppose, would be helpful, but I think they give you limp dick.
Aside from thinning hair, I have sun damage on some skin from too much time outside with no sunscreen.
With some lasers on the skin and a little work on the hair I could probably pass for 40. Physically, I feel as good as I did in my early-40s. Haven't seen much of a drop off there.

I strongly agree with this. I was talking with a woman about fifteen years older than me about high school reunions recently. She had recently been to her 25th, and I had been to my 10th. We were both taken aback by how different the men look (in an unfortunate way) compared to the women. I'm sure women at a 25th reunion really are showing their age to some extent, but at my 10th it was extremely noticeable that the women all looked the same or hotter than they did in high school*, while the men almost all looked worse. Even at 28, most men had put on weight and had worse skin; many were losing their hair. I don't mean to judge these men too harshly as individuals, but the idea that women "lose their looks" earlier just does not at all track with my experience.
*I know some people will want to refute this with talk of evolutionary biology or peak fertility or whatever, but I really don't think it's controversial that many women truly do look better in their late twenties (or even- gasp- early thirties!) than they do at 18. For many women, it takes some maturity and trial and error to figure out which looks flatter them. Many also become more confident as they age, and that plays a large part in both how they carry themselves and how they choose to dress and groom themselves.

This is a silly anecdotal argument for you to make. Women can not know how men perceive women at different ages. All we can look at is externally validateable information that suggests that many more men date much younger women than the other way round.

Ironically, the conclusion of the vast study on metabolism released in 2021: that metabolism doesn't decline between 20-60, and perceived decline is down to lifestyle changes, and the compounding of the results of lifestyle changes, is exactly why I agree with you that men tend to look worse at a younger age.
Men don't make enough effort, and their lifestyles tend to suck for maintaining physical attractiveness.
I was 24, changing for a night out with some old school friends, when I looked around and all but one of my mates was sporting a sad little beer belly, zero muscle tone, and coupled with the limp hair, slight excess facial fat, and body hair, it was all rather pitiful.
With same lifestyle, women reach peak at 21, but men at 31.
Lifestyle is the big one.
I don't think women really peak at 21, though.
Regardless, worrying about when you peak is silly. It's majoring in the minors. Even ignoring the overweight etc, very few people are consistently eating well, sleeping well, exercising well, and putting effort in skin care, hair styling and clothing. The last 3 are particularly lacking in most men, which is one of the reasons non-overweight women age well.
This blog on dermatologica's website sums it up nicely:
"Regardless of age, men have a higher collagen density than women. Lucky, right? Because collagen content is directly related to the signs of skin aging, it has been said a woman's skin is about 15 years older than a man's of the same age. However, men are less sun savvy than women, meaning they don't use sunscreens as much. This could help explain why the "15 year" skin age difference is not readily noticed. UV damage from the sun can add years to a man's skin and negate the benefit of slowed intrinsic aging."
Yes! Besides having facial hair, there are structural differences between men's skin and women's skin. Androgen (testosterone) stimulation causes an increase in skin thickness, which accounts for why a man's skin is about 25%...
Your guy friends are lying lmao. Women peak is around 18-24 for attractiveness. Men peak mid 30s to 50s. Men start gaining real power, success, and knowledge later in life which is what makes men attractive. Females are only valued based on looks men's value is based on many things. Most men who take care of themselves can sustain their peak even into 60s.

This sums it up. Women get fat after 24. And men could care less about your career ambition or lame realtor gig. Women keep all that money for themselves but men are expected to give it to their fat wives. No thanks. Men get sick of that &hit and want their old hag wives to beat it after 30. Trade in for a younger hotter model who doesn’t start fights for no reason. Truth is hard to swallow. Runner women are no better as they do nothing to dress nicely or take care of their feet. Wear their running clothes everywhere, how lame.

What if you mentally ameliorate at this age? Does that cancel it out? Surely it isn't just physical... one would hope. Also I feel this is very specific! I don't know many women in their mid 30s where everything is sagging lol.
The brutally brutal: dudes, if you know how to present yourself, can crush into early 50s. This means the whole package of looks, how you carry yourself, how you have done in life. Ladies anything after late 20’s is decline. Women select on competence, men sort on attractiveness/fertility/not totally crazy.
