We changed the title to the correct time and to note that it was a state meet record, not a California state record. According to DyeStat, Engelhardt has the record at 4:33.29 from a 1600m split during a mile at Arcadia last year: https://www.dyestat.com/gprofi...
Out in 65 and closing in 70 was a bad strategy, but overall a great effort.
after barely qualifying trying to pace the semifinal and then hitting traffic during her kick she clearly decided she was going to put this one on ice from the start and take no chances. cant blame her. and no Dalia Frias anymore to chase her down.
True, I just think if she was a bit more controlled and went out in 66/67 she would have ran 4:32 and broke the overall 1600 m HS record.
Incredible! Does not seem like there was much time between the 1600 and 800 events
An hour and 35 min between events.
She knew what she was doing in the semi of the 1600. She said she would run 4:50 and she did, everyone that was paying attention knew that time would make it in.
The 800 was handed to her when Browne didn’t push the pace enough and fell right into Sadie’s hands.

But the recovery time between the 1600 and the 3200 was apparently not enough for Hanne Thomsen, arguably one of the favorites in the 3200. She takes 4th in the 1600 in 4:43.63 and then is a DNF in the 3200. Thomsen seems more like a longer distance runner and the 1600 took a lot out of her. The top 5 were all under 10:12, with fast improving Rylee Blade FTW in 10:02.19. None of the first five are seniors.

I dont think it was about recovering. She said in the interview after the 1600 that she has been having issues with her foot and that she knew if she ran the 16 she might not be able to make it through the 32 but she felt running with the fast girls in a faster race was still more valuable then defending her 3200 title (!) so she did it anyway. and if you watch the race video you can see her suddenly wince in pain about 2 1/2 minutes in and after that was clearly limping and then disappeared from the race.
It did not help that she ran the 1600 (multiple heats I believe), 800, and 3200m the prior weekend at NCS. Not sure if that was her decision or coaches but so many events can strain even the best distance runners, and could have caused an injury from overuse.

Having only run two laps of the 3200 I would agree this wasn't a recovery problem and more like an injury concern.

It wasn't handed to her, Sadie just played it smart. That, and she is just a stud!
She is also entered in the 2-mile at the Brooks PR in 2 weeks. She was entered in the mile, but as of yesterday's entries, she is in the 2 mile. Irene Riggs is no longer listed in the 2 mile unfortunately.

I agree that Sadie played it smart. But if you are 3.5 seconds faster than someone else in the 800 would you allow it to go out slow and keep everyone in the race?
