What about people that don't work for a company? My main clients are in NY, London, Barcelona, HK and Sydney. Today it's not so much work from home as work in whatever city, hotel or country you happen to be in.
It's funny to me that a guy who tries to build futuristic tech also does not want people who work to have a better life. What is the point of the tech then? I thought all this progress and science was supposed to make our lives better? He seems bitter and confused perpetually.

That’s because shareholders have thus far benefitted more from technological advancement than workers have. Tech advancement has been used to enhance productivity and corporate profit rather than enhance worker quality of life. You could use technology improvement to keep productivity constant so workers would have to work fewer hours. Instead, we force unsustainable growth for the benefit of the shareholders.

Evolution happens, not "forcing". At a certain point, the companies who use improved productivity to grow tend to become bigger and more successful than the companies who do what you suggest. (They may still survive and thrive to an extent.)
There's really no aspect of my work that would be improved by being in the room with some MFs.
Are you not an aspect of your work? Don't look now but you clearly don't like people, if they are MF's by default. I don't think remote has improved you.
If you were with your co-workers in person, you might notice subtle clues about their opinion of you that you miss in your limited remote interactions.

the internet is full of jerks
Elon is an ultra productive, once in a generation type of lunatic work a holic. Those types of people are rare, but they can change society. He has done that through his hard work. That will NOT work for most individuals. There are millions of U.S. workers that prefer or want to work from home, with no obvious detriment to their employer. That’s fine, and helps those people live balanced lives. There are also plenty of workers that won’t be productive at home. That’s just the way it is… Elon isn’t exactly right or wrong in this.
there are people who work well from home, but overall it is not for the best. I understand why people love it and are so protective of it, but the majority are getting away with something.
sorry if you have a 90 minute commute both ways. there are also solutions to that.
in the end, employers will make decisions about what is best for their bottom line. It will work both ways, from one case to the next.

this is the most balance post ive read, and yet somehow manages to get vote downs. What could somebody possibly have a problem with in this post?
The haters don't want to listen Elon is saying. It's time for people to learn some compassion. Think about hotel maids. Think about warehouse employees. These people are going into work, in person every. single. day. It is very unfair to them that the rest of are allowed to work from home. It is messed up. In fact, to take Mr. Musk's sage assertion to it's logical conclusion, it is also very unfair and, in fact, immoral for laptop "workers" to accept higher wages, fewer working hours, or longer vacations than blue collar workers. Everyone should be equal. (Ever heard of the constitution??) Of course, there must be some exceptions for bosses/owners and upper management.
He can shove it. The only people that listen to him are his weird incel followers. He has absolutely nothing of substance to offer.
I didnt watch the vid, but you guys know he builds cars and rockets right? You cant do that in your pajamas on your laptop from the couch
Actually, the engineers that design the cars and rockets can.
So, the "moral" of the story is, some people can work form home and some can't.
But Musk's view is it hurts the feelings of the manufacturing workers to have to come in and not see these other people in person who they don't actually interact with.
(And Musk doesn't build cars and rockets, he tells people to build them. He isn't there in person every day himself)
Working from home is bad for car sales. Really bad.
Musk's primary business depends on car sales.
Musk denigrates working from home as "morally bad".
See a connection?
Yeah, the guy sells cars that are IDEAL for commuting and thinks working from home is bad. He needs a muzzle.
i think musk has a point, but not sure about calling it "morally bad" that is going pretty deep.
on the other hand, you could see it turning into a case of the haves and have nots. i think this is fine, but there are sensitive people out there who would say it is not fair that 50% of the population has to leave their house and family to work while the other half gets to work from the comfort of their own home without having to send their kids off. It is not a stretch to imagine some people comparing this to slavery, especially if there is one particular culture that gets to stay home, while some other cultures are out busting their butts away from home.
that's not my viewpoint, but you know there are people who will go there.

So it's about jealousy.
People have to go into work to build things or stock things or handle the register - in air conditioning and heat. While others are out working in the elements all day. Is that fair?
Life isn't fair. People get paid differently. Is Musk suggesting that he and all of his working get paid the exact same wage? That would be fair.
I do agree with you that some people are seeing that way. They are jealous people.
