It always amazes me that despite it's popularity, people don't understand a core tenant of Christianity. People are Christians specifically because they are aware of their own depravity and evil. If they were good in the eyes of God, they wouldn't need a savior.
Yes but once becoming a Christian you are held to a higher standard and not to operate by the standards of the world or the work of Christ is put to ill effect. It is quite easy to knowingly do what is wrong because you think you have some get out of jail card. You knowingly do wrong - as Paul said you are no Christian.
But he did make 3xcuses. They were more realistic and credible than those he cited but they were still excuses.
I also find apologies laughable. If you were really sorry you would come clean before being forced to by a failed test. A person truly sorry for cheating comes out and admits to it without a positive test.
I equated to people who are sorry they cheated on their spouse after their spouses already caught them. You're not sorry you did it, you're sorry you got caught.

You are probably right here.
I was thinking about his “November” date.
First I thought it did not make sense
But then I thought about it a bit more. He kind of got to the top at PTO US. But then was only able to keep his peak for 10 minutes (Gee… That’s also how long I would keep my peak form - one week or two and that’s it). Then he completely bombed at Kona. Then got injured. Maybe he thought. I can get to the top clean, but I am so close to the line that the probability of injury is super high and there is no way I can race at the top in multiple races clean (which you need to do if you are going to make a living). So he thought, I need to cheat.
If I get caught, well so be it. If I don’t get caught then I get to be a triathlete.
No lose situation for him.
Of course it’s a lose situation for the guys that he beat and try to do it cleanly (no cheaters ever seem to think about that).
Oh... you believe this guy stopped lying when he got caught? Lying liar is still lying.
I don’t know. But you may be right.
November is super convenient.
He won PTO US in September. That’s US$100K. Ditlev, Long and Laidlow would probably be pretty mad about that.
He won Tremblant in August (prize money). Not sure if he was qualified for Kona before that. If he wasn’t, he would have stolen prize money from someone and a Kona spot (which is valuable for sponsorship purposes for a pro).
He was 11th at PTO Canada in July. That’s also ok money…
I don't like this athlete and I don't like this story one bit.
it was nice of him not to lie about his guilt, and to call out blatant liars like Shelby.
Problem is, he then lied about everything else.
He did it by himself. he got it off the internet. no one helped him. no one knew. Oh, and he only started AFTER the biggest wins in his career.
He's only retiring because he got caught. He had no intention of stopping if he didn't get caught.
The comments on his post are brutal, and from triathletes too, not trolls. Calling him out on his dishonesty, noting that mental health struggles are not an excuse to cheat, and steal from others.
Ultimately we get nothing from this. No information no pathways to prevent doping because he isn't going to help us in that regard. He's not going to talk about where he got it, who helped him, or anything. Even his friend who interviewed him in the podcast very clearly did not believe him.
This isn't "telling the truth" this is a guy who is looking for a pat on the back because he did the bare minimum.
I don't know much about the tri community because I'm strictly a runner, but I really respect them based on what I'm seeing in the comments. Tons of criticism, poking holes in his story and reasoning, calling him out without being abusive. This includes blue check athletes, some top shelf athletes too.
This is the energy we need, and are lacking in running. Too many timid runners afraid to speak up with a friend of theirs is caught. Too many gullible naive people who think it's mean to call someone out for doping and lying about it, or "trolling" to question suspicious performances.
Not really an excuse, rather an explanation to his followers about his state of mind when he decided to dope. He's not asking for the punishment to be reduced; he's not claiming the test is wrong.
Within the context of positive drug tests, this is refreshing to see.
Nah that's an excuse in my book. so he can still look like a goody two shoes to his followers and get clout for being "honest." Bro even trotted out the ol' "I only started doping when I was struggling." Homeboy's likely been on more secret sauce than a Big Mac since he realized he could earn some cash doin' it. Y'all fell for the bait of his "no excuses" response but I'm seein' through it like grandma's underpants.
You are being really an a-hole. He said he started to dope when he was struggling. That is why a lot of people dope!

How often do you confess to something before you are found out? You are going to lie when you say "all the time".

What would qualify as not being an excuse?
Struggling is right after your biggest win ever? You have a bad iron man (an event famous for people dying because of length and weather) and your first thought is I need some EPO. And amazingly enough you can get it within a couple days.... And l am just guessing but in the time period after he started doping, his training was no better than right before his biggest win...
But yeah it is amazing how good drug testing is these days. Everyone is caught right after the first time they use it....

Didn’t get to read comments from other triathletes.
However, I listened to the podcast. He was horrible.
”I started to take EPO because I believed others were taking it”
”However, I don’t believe that Blum or Iden or my teammates (Lionel and Von Berg) are taking it.
So who was he worried about? He eliminated #1, #2, #5 and most recent winner of Ironman Texas (Von Berg).
So he was worried about Ditlev #3, who he beat at PTO US by 42sec? Laidlow #4, who he beat at PTO US? Long #6, who he beat at PTO US? Neumann #7, who was 8th at PTO Canada (Chartier was 11th)? Who is he talking about? Ya, I beat this guy clean, but I think he’s doping and I want to beat him by even more…. Makes no sense.
Yes, Kienle called him out on “I did this all by myself” comment. No doctors, no other athlete. Not even a guy at the gym. You do all this complicated training. You use lactate meters. You get a coach from Norway. But you take EPO based on something you read on the internet. Lienle doesn’t believe it
Then his comment. I don’t want to through others under the bus????? What type of comment is that? If you are acting alone, how is that even a sentence? The sentence should be. I am so sorry about what I did. I will never be able to apologize enough to my teammates and my coach who believed in me. I would see my teammates every day and I knew that I would perhaps be cheating them out of prize money in a few months and still looked at them straight in the face. I don’t know if they can ever forgive me. Not, I don’t want to through them under the bus…
He either can’t communicate very well or there is something really bad at the top of the sport. His interview really hurt the sport if there is really nothing there, because he made it sound really bad.
Nothing he was saying made any sense.
I feel bad for him, but obviously I feel even worse for the others (if he took PEDs prior to September 2022)
says all the top guys are doping (except the ones in his group) despite having never tested positive. also says he wasn’t doped for his wins and if you don’t believe him go back and retest his samples.
so many inconsistencies and contradictions in the drivel that comes from his mouth. good riddance.
