Is nike no longer enforcing their own rules or did they change it? For years NXR/NXN etc. said that the athlete had to be in good standing with their states association. Brody hasty was allowed to compete despite not being on his school's team because he did nothing that offended the Tennesse association rules. However, Youngs + Sahlman all have become ineligible by violating california's rules, they are therefore not eligible to run at this meet unless Nike changed their rules.
I don't see Leo getting beaten here. He's run 3:40 and 3:39 this spring against pro and collegiate runners. He almost won the race on both occasions. He closes really fast.
Prediction of places:
1. Leo
2. Birnbaum
3. Lex
4. Some other dude
5. Burns
Based on NXN last fall, he doesn’t always close really fast. Before this year, most posters believed Lex has the better top end speed.
- watch this race and tell me with a straight face that Lex has more speed than Leo. Look at the gap Leo puts on his brother in the last 400. That's power.
What's wrong with running in South Dakota? Birnbaum has far, far lower levels of competition and coaching than in Southern California, as well as difficult winter conditions. Young has had, I've always maintained, pro levels of coaching and the best teammates of any high school distance runner in history by far and many occasions to run in perfect conditions nearby, as at Mt. Sac. So, the Youngs are more developed, not to say fully developed, than Birnbaum. Hence, I see more improvement ahead for Birnbaum, who was already faster as a junior than the Youngs have run thus far in the mile, than for the Youngs. Just as Nico improved, so will they. But Birnbaum will be a strong pro. My last prediction for that was Cooper Teare after I saw a video of him in hs.

Birmbaums coach isn't a total idiot, he knows what hes doing, but I agree the young twins are certainly farther along on their development. I know some people are already out on Jerry at Oregon, but I am a huge believer in him, and I am very excited for him and the future of Oregon distance runners
Birnbaum is coached by his dad. I think he ran in college. Seems to know what he’s doing as Simeon is improving year over year, having fun, and recently ran 8:34…
Leo certainly has looked great lately. However, Burns and Birnbaum are still sub 4 milers. You can't forget that or take that way from them. They can probably all win a perfect race on any given day if set up right.
I am surprised by the Young twins and how well they've performed considering their stature compared with Nico and the Sahlman's, their lower leg and foot mechanics are very cumbersome and not pretty/fluid. Nico was rough because he was lanky during HS but has cleaned up considerably. I am really surprised that with the level of training they are doing this hasn't been addressed. Sprint form warmups were team wide 25 years ago when I was in HS. Wonder how much improvement cleaning up their mechanics could bring.
I don't think there's anything wrong with their form, thats just how their body mechanics make them look. What catches my attention is how much muscle mass they have. It's incredibly rare to see 5k runners as stocky as them, especially Lex. Even compared to rheir own brother Nico they're way more muscular. I know this is pretty far fetched by I wonder if they have a potential myostatin defficiency.
I did not mix them up. Birnbaum being coached by his dad and Burns being coached by his dad are not mutually exclusive.
Birnbaum has been coached by his dad, former Adams State runner, in the past but now he's mostly coached by his high school coach Jesse Coy. Both of these guys seem to know what they're doing.
