Italian runner found dead ripped apart by brown bear on trail. Apparently Italy has a population of a few hundred brown bears. I never understood people who hike or run alone on trails in bear country. Two people are always a must and one has to carry pepper spray, two being preferable. I wouldn’t go hiking in bear trails without a companion and pepper spray and a shotgun.
I've run there many times and I have never in hundreds of miles seen a bear. I would not run with bear spray and the idea of running with a "shotgun" is too stupid to even entertain.
Where Did I say I would run with a shotgun ? I said I would only hike with 2 or more people, and hike only with bear spray and a shotgun. And shotguns are very effective against small brown bears, maybe not ones weighing over 800 pounds in America and especially in Alaska.
I do it all the time. Far more likely I will die in auto accident driving to the trail or auto accident driving back from trail running or walking.
Such a weak overused lazy argument... the more likely to die in car accident. It has zero connection to swimming with sharks, running with bears etc. Now if you were on a trail and you came across 50 grizzles and they were all less than a few feet from you during your entire run . That would be the same as driving to the trail likelihood of death comparison
Fifty grizzles? You obviously are not an insurance actuary. I doubt your math skills are sound. If you have life insurance outside of group life provided by your employer, contact your insurance company and tell insurance company you want to know how likely is the probability of being mauled to death by a bear on trail runs. I have seen bear tracks, tracks too large to be black bear tracks, 2003, most likely brown bear. I have been about 400m from a black bear, 2011. You seem to believe my previous statement regarding auto deaths is irrelevant. Government and large media want us to ignore the risk of death, auto accidents. I will list my five most significant concerns while on trails in no particular order:
* Unleashed dog. Dog owners know how calm & obedient are their dogs. I don't.
* Full blown psychotic individuals who have dropped out of society. Gals & guys who live in the woods. May live full time in the woods.
* Desperados whom are more than slightly paranoid living in the woods. May live part time in the woods.
* Guys running meth labs in the woods. I doubt they live in the woods full time.
* Law enforcement occasionally go into the woods. See above. I worry about being in the middle of a dynamic situation.
If people would stop encroaching on the bear habitat and forests there would be no problem. Bears have a right to live, too. And they're so beautiful. And they understand what we're doing.
Well, except the bears in this area were brought in from Slovenia in an attempt to “re-wild” the area. Someone decided it would be good to have bears living there, killing a persons is just the latest problem it’s caused.
Too many jokes and laughs in this thread. A 26 y/o boy is dead. And I also read some wrong info. He was not running in a place really far away from the local towns. The track was not a single track, but wide as a road, suitable not just for runners , but also for little trucks and off-road cars. So don’t blame the boy.
You're completely right. People overreact to such low odds of they seem particularly scary, not realizing they do far riskier (but more boring seeming) activities every day

Seriously. This is a horrific, tragic event that took down a young man in his prime.
I'm pretty sure anyone here would rather die in an auto accident than get eaten alive by a bear. You can run anywhere you'd like. Ultimately this bear will have to be put down anyway so it behooves any person that truly cares about wildlife to at least carry bear spray. It's no burden to do so. What a shame about that guy.

Wait. How do you know he was running alone? His mistake was likely running with someone who was faster than him. I agree, running with someone is important, but always make sure they are slower than you.

The 50 grizzly reference was making the point that driving is sold as more dangerous only because of the sheer number of cars on the road at the same time as you. The only reason statistics say it is safer around a griz or a shark is that you are not going to see them everything you are on a trail or in the ocean. But the second you are 100 feet from a grizzly what are the odds then? Are they the same odds of every time you go for a drive and you encounter another vehicle?

It’s a retลrded comparison because the average person spends about 10,000,000 times more time driving that they do running on a trail in bear country, so, of course, they’re more likely to be killed driving. By this logic, people are more likely to die doing pretty much anything including sitting on the can, cooking, or mowing the lawn.
