Seems like Schumacher is utilizing the old Oregon approach: XC is a big prep season, Indoors doesn't even exist, Outdoors is everything.
Bowerman did that.
Dellinger did that.
Maybe Uncle Phil wants it that way again?
There are no PAC-12 Indoor Track championships, so unless you're in a position to do damage at NCAAs, it really is a season that can be treated more as an extension of outdoor.
I'd imagine the program expectation at Oregon is an 18 to 24 month race to be great, rather than a 6-9 month race to be solid. Jerry has shown his focus is in training is on being best prepared for those times that really matter. They've probably got a date circled (perhaps when NCAA XC's are at Jerry's old school...) when they really want to be putting on a show.
they are either in shape right now or they aren't. if they were in 3:58 shape, what's the harm of letting them race and drop a fast time? so i am guessing they are not fit.
I'm surprised they didn't even go for a DMR Weekend mark, but generally no one but Cook was in a position to do anything indoors, where they have no conference meet, no regional qualifier, no home meets, which is basically all their outdoor season is.
Prepping 3 guys to run regional qualifiers on the last possible day in a home meet attended by Oregon and a local community college. Then regionals and nationals. 3 meet season is really pushing Jerry’s system to the limits
Everybody else will just do laps on turf field until XC.
I'm curious about this whole turf approach too. Are they doing most of their workouts on turf? And why? The energy return seems to make it much harder especially for some athletes. And do they do sessions indoors, or is it all outside?
Also, I really appreciate the insights from some of the posts.
Well said. Also it's well-known that many runners struggle in their first year under Jerry given the intensity of the program. He likely recognizes that and is redshirting a lot of the team to be even better next year.
I think Oregon will likely not be placing an emphasis on indoor track. Especially with no indoor conference meet there is really no pressure on the distance athletes to go time chasing like the rest of the country does. Will be interesting to see how the team turns out in the spring.
I think he can handle going to two workouts a day.
You missed my entire point-
Coaching at college isn't just workouts. It is developing boys into men.
Lol only if you recruit immature men I guess? You have support staff who help you with keeping these kids in line. You have the leverage at Oregon to cut a kid who can't hack it.
What happened to Rheinhardt Harrison? 3:59 in high school last year but has pulled the classic freshman disappearing act at Oregon. I don't believe in redshirting. Put him out there.

I think jerry would disagree with this, he probably doesn't want them racing for nothing (national qualifiers would be hard to get considering the relative talent of the team compared to the rest of the ncaa) early in the season and wants to get in a solid chunk of uninterrupted training under his program, if they don't race indoors ever again I would be surprised, but I think it makes sense this year and maybe next as well
When you have a guy like Rheinhardt Harrison and you get almost nothing from him as a freshman to this point, you'd better have a good reason.
I don't think he's raced at all.
Has anyone thought of this, "Perhaps Jerry doesn't want them to race until they are ready to shine." He's probably saying, "Look this is Oregpn. We have a standard of excellence we expect here. Until you are ready to hit that standard, you aren't racing."
Rheinhardt Harrison isn't on scholarship to run 3:58 and come close to making NCAAs.
Plenty of big names go to Oregon and don’t impress though. It is a notch above Stanford these days. NAU has been kicking their butt for a long time and way before they were getting better recruits. Harrison’s trajectory has greatly slowed anyways. I expect another Austin Tomango honestly.

So he's on scholarship to jog around campus for two years? Thanks for the useful insight. 👎
I get that freshman get a pass, but the other 20 guys don't. The guys that aren't injured are doing workouts, but apparently not up to Jerry's high standards to race? That's a waste of scholarships.

I just think it's a young team and Jerry wants to get everyone adjusted to his training. He historically takes athletes to big indoor races. He's capable of having his athletes run well in indoor and outdoor.

Seriously! No AD would be ok with spending scholarship money on athletes so they could intentionally NOT compete for two years (literally half their time in college, assuming they don't redshirt).
And where does scoring 2 points to finish in 48th place at NCAA Indoors fit in with Oregon's "Standards of Excellence," keeping in mind the previous coach (who was fire for this guy!) was winning this meet nearly every other year for a decade and as recently as 2 years ago?
The amount of interference and number of excuses Rojo has for Jerry is astonishing.
I just checked performances on TFFRS. Outside of Cook the Oregon men’s mid distance and distance were very bad. Not even relative to where they were in 2021, relative to the rest of the NCAA. It is actually the worst indoor season for Oregon in probably decades. Wtf is Jerry doing.
