) that her biggest goals this year are to go sub 4:30 this year and win nationals. If she goes sub 4:30 as a Sophmore, we may have a female American Ingebrigtsen.
Before any superfans get butthurt, that's not a knock on Ms. Engelhardt
Hollow in the sense it does her little good in terms of tactical experience
No. High school runners are way too diverse in ability for tactics to matter much. Not every race can be or even needs to be cut-throat.
Racing against boys at smaller invitationals where she doesn't have competition from other girls would serve her extremely well if she continues to compete after high school *20th fastest time of the day for boys 3200 was 9:51
Better for her and the sport had she jumped in the boys rated race*
Again, no. Boys and girls are different. The HS guy who runs 9:51 does it way different than the HS girl.
Who cares, she is going to either plateau or get hurt from being this fast this early. It never turns out well for runners at her age being that fast that early in their career.
Well we have 2 exceptions to this rule right now w/ Tuohy and Tyynismaa excelling in NCAA. Going with this sample of 2, it implies that all teen stars eventually end up at NC state.
Yet it feels hollow to me considering she lapped 2nd place (11:33)

Don't think girls can race boys? Never heard it happen? Might be up to each state? But when they have separate races or teams, I think u gotta compete with your gender?
Girls are 100% allowed to race with boys and it happens all across the US in area with very low population density.
For sure though any time a girl runs in a mixed race doesn't count for record purposes.
I don't know of any high profile girls that have elected to jump in a boys' race.
I've coached a few 10:20s girls though that ran with the boys in the 3200 in a league meet and they both had a blast because there was absolutely no pressure but at the same time it was fun for them to have so many people around them in a race. They actually liked that it was more aggressive too.
Anyway, most people don't know what it's like to run 90% of their races alone off the front. It seems awe inspiring when you've never been that person. But I promise it does very little for the development of a competitor to be competing against the clock in all but a few races.
I speak from the perspective of an athlete that loves competing more than winning. I'm realistic and not expecting it to actually happen. Just stating my opinion.
It was not a HS boy's race but Juliette Whittaker did run the mile last year at the John Hay Distance Festival. All events were open/unisex. She ran 4:36.15 which was 8th in her heat, 67th overall and the fastest mile she ran in high school. It was prep for Brooks PR where she would have some competition including Engelhardt.
Exactly. I was good my junior year and won a few dual meets (with times ranging from 10:00 to 9:40) but never won a race with competition - I was 2nd a couple of times to guys running 9:37, but didn't win. My kick was weak and my race strategy was basically frontrunning like Pre, so I couldn't win a competitive race.
I increased my mileage a fair amount for senior year and ended up breaking 9:00. The people who beat me the previous year were only running 9:20-9:25. I ended up getting hurt in mid May and pulled out of the national meets, so I literally never raced against competition. I could run solo quite well - every race was basically a time trial - but there's a big difference between running 9:00 and winning by 100m and having 10+ other sub 9:00 guys to make it competitive. Winning was fun, and running fast made it such that I didn't need a kick, but I never was tested against national competition.

This is non-sensical for lots of reasons but also the 20th place guy probably ran awful splits and Sadie I assume ran smart splits so this wouldn't even be helpful racing wise (again not-withstanding why it's dumb for other reasons)

As a soph in HS she doesn't need to worry about getting tactical experience right now. She just needs to focus on staying healthy and showing gradual improvement. Tuohy never had any competition in HS and has turned into a excellent tactical racer.
Besides, last year Sadie ran in a number of races against some of the top girls in the country. There were at least 2 against Frias that came down to the final meters and 2 against Whittaker.
What is this “gender” of which you speak? What if she identified as non-binary on the day of that race? (In the political climate of today, is that an invalid question?)
I think the late Kim Gallagher did that in 1979, she ran in a boys 2 mile at a dual meet and broke the national record. They didn't bother to record it because they knew ahead of time it wouldn't count. I don't recall the exact time, but it was under 10 minutes and she finished 2nd in the race just a few strides behind the winner. I think her brother submitted it to T&F News a week later but it was turned down when they discovered it was in a boy's race. Btw, this was on a cinder track and she was not going for the record and didn't even know what the record was.

This has been proven false many times. So you might want to be careful throwing around the "never" tag.
