In 1962 we had a confrontation with Russia over the placement of nuclear weapons in Cuba. Everybody was scared to death. There was no hot war, but schoolchildren were practicing hiding under their desks. Fast forward 60 years. We are in a hot war with Russia that is ultimately over the placement of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Our president believes concerns about escalation to the use of nuclear weapons are a triviality. The American public is misled into believing that the risk of nuclear war over this is negligible. Keep this escalation going and Putin will certainly use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Then what? This is not a subject whose discussion should be limited to two Progressives chatting over lobster. This is not a subject that should be limited to registered users of LRC.
This post screams "my brain is so smooth"
Do you really think this russian propaganda about Nukes is true?
We have been able to strike anywhere on the planet with ICBMs for the better part of 50 years now. Icbms can be "stationed" in Ohio if you want and they can hit moscow. Aditionally, you think if Ukraine had nukes they wouldn't have used them when russia was nearly capturing Kyiv?
I genuinely cannot believe Conservatives believe the silliest parts of russian propaganda like this. Occams razor means nothing to them
The flight time of a nuclear weapon from Ohio to Russia is about 30 minutes. From Ukraine about 5 minutes. The Russians don't want nukes in Ukraine for the same reason the US doesn't. It would force them to be on hair trigger alert with a response not only against Ukraine but also against the mainland US.

So where is your evidence that there are american nukes in Ukraine? Or do you have none? Russian bot.
I didn't think either of them said anything particularly controversial. They both represent different demographics (age/race/gender/etc). I'm not really sure why this article exists but maybe it's to highlight that you can sit down and talk with people you don't agree with 100% & listen/learn/evolve on divisive issues. So many are set in their ways so much that they're not even willing to have a conversation. Politics is designed to be polarizing in 2023. Most people have commonalities along class lines that rarely gets brought up when you're supposed to hate each other based on something like one's abortion stance.
I'll rephrase this so the mods don't delete it for being "factually incorrect". The FBI has not denied that there were undercover agents provoking violence on that date.
I'm not going to say this as bluntly as I want to: but why on earth are conservatives rooting so hard for a country that is as evil as they get?
That's not really the conservative position.
The conservative position is that We shouldn't have stopped the ceasefire from last April. We don't trust the bureaucracy to manage the war well. The US interest in this manner is primarily about looting Ukraine and war profiteering for the military industrial complex. Sending weapons to Ukraine is likely a bad idea considering our supply chains are currently shot (source Lockheed Martin and Boeing earnings calls). It's not obvious Ukraine is a good guy are, even though Russia is clearly a bad guy. (E.g. Ukraine denying water to Crimea and the strong facist movement in Ukraine). This "war" has been going on since the 900s and we have no business sticking our nose in it now. Sanctions on Russia are likely to be ineffective and drive them more strongly into the arms of China (not that they weren't there anyways). The way we have treated India poorly for skirting Russian sanctions and refusing to condemn Russia while not critiquing China is a blunder.
With that said, there is certainly a good deal of the Russian (Dugin) philosophy which resonates with the right which makes them more sympathetic to the Russian cause then they ought to be.
Yeah because this peaceful civil protest is exactly the same as a riot where physical damage was done, guards were violently assaulted, feces was smeared on walls all in the search of hanging the vice president and to attach members of congress.
I'm requiring registration to post on this thread as political thread are always hard to moderate.
As mentioned before, I find the practice of requiring registration on "political threads" you care about and not as a general practice to be an implicit admission that there is a systemic problem with bad actors on the board.
Your board, your rules, but this is why LetsRun has the reputation it does.
He's surprisingly based and reasonable about Ukraine. I knew that he was progressive since a feature here stated he worked for a progressive nonprofit, but he stated that "I find the lack of dissent a little surprising. The left-wing progressive space is generally anti-war, so we should be thinking about this".
Most leftists are sheep. They'll put a Ukrainian flag in their profile on Twitter and do what the DNC and MSM tell them to think.
Anyone who uses the word 'based' and isn't joking has instantly identified himself as an utter moron whose opinions on anything should be disregarded. And the rest of your paragraph reinforces that conclusion.

God Almighty, you don't have the *tiniest* idea WTF you're talking about on *any* aspect of your 'discussion' here. But your absolute ignorance does nothing to dissuade you from expressing your views as if you had some kind of expertise. Truly f***ing amazing.

I think he should have let it be anonymous to all. Political threads are more likely to spiral out of control but who cares.
Robert likes using some of the new tools mods have to quickly change the status of a thread.
People should be able to express political opinions anonymously. And considering we limit unregistered handles to 1 per post there are limits to someone astro turfing the thread.
Registration doesn't do a ton to prevent bad actors as we've seen with twitter, facebook, etc.

Thanks for responding.
A key difference is that the "block user" function of the board doesn't filter anonymous userids. Perhaps there could be a option to block anonymous posts in general.
And to preempt the inevitable "you want to live in a bubble" responses, I have no issue with hearing out and engaging good faith posters with different opinions if they are willing to put in the effort to support those opinions. What I don't care for is being carpet bombed by the same tired material day after day.
Edit to add (great feature BTW): The original point still stands, Rojo, at least, is applying a different standard to his threads and apparently doing so because he's doesn't want to deal with crap that regular users do.
