A big positive in all this is that Nuguse is actually racing in a high level meet against international athletes. I still think that the biggest thing Cole Hocker got wrong in 2021 was not gaining experience against an international field. It's a different game to racing on the US circuit. Win or lose, Nuguse comes out of this race better simply for having competed against an international field. I hope he can also squeeze into the Birmingham meet on Saturday, he's in Europe anyway so might as well

And Fisher, we were all whining that he wasn't racing and only doing time trials. Glad to see he's racing.
The interesting question for me is who follows Sowinski. I can't ever remember seeing Katir lead or sit on a pacer in a 1500. He usually aims to sit on the race leader so don't be surprised to see him try and make Nuguse do the work
I’d expect this, but I don’t think Nuguse would be that vulnerable to it. This is indoors and that makes a huge difference. I suspect if Sowinsky drops off after 900 or 1000 paced at 3:31 that Nuguse will be happy to run a 28.5-29.5 lap or two tempo before uncorking his finish. If he can run 25-27 again for the last lap to 300m, Katir won’t beat him and may in fact be vulnerable to Garcia Romo. Katir outlasts guys in the 1500, in the 3k/5k he can produce more of a kick but it is not like a Woody Kincaid kick even…it’s more a grinding last 600
Altitude is too high for a WR. 2s disadvantage (see article on homepage) is too much to overcome. National records are in the cards, but I’d give a <1% chance of a WR.

Madrid is at 665 meters above sea level. Is the disadvantage really two seconds? That's really hard to believe.

I can see that happening as well, though I give Katir a little more credit for being able to kick off a fast pace. He was 6th with 200 to go at Worlds and left Kerr, Kipsang, and Cheruiyot trailing. Big test for Nuguse if it really is being paced for 2:20 at 1000 - if he can produce 26 off that sort of pace then even Jakob will take note. I suspect it will end up slower, in the 3:32-3:34 range

Agreed. This experience will help him at worlds etc.
