Alex Kipchirchir at a 2006 IAAf world cup race ran a 49.4 last lap I believe and a ~36 last 300. Don't I believe I've heard of anything faster that's confirmed

49.52 leader-to-leader, with Kipchirchir probably 49.4x like you said. 3:52 winning time. This is the winner until proven otherwise.
No argument with your post. I do wonder though if the winning time matters at all, although the OP did not mention this. Presumably someone like Emmanuel Korir could probably run 1100m in 4 minutes and close in like 47-48. I only mention this because a fast last lap is impressive but for me the context plays a role.

Absolutely incredible! This is the only legit sub 50 split I've been able to find. Even more incredible that I believe I see Gabe Jennings mixing it up in the pack left in Kipchirchir's wake.
You do have to wonder what El G, Coe, Ryun, Cram, Morceli at their peaks could have run an Olympic final last lap in after going through 1100 in 3 flat. All five would have beaten Centro and probably by at least a full second.

I don't think that's a guarantee. 50.X is fast enough to be in the mix. Plus how many of those guys could run 13:00 5000m?
Anybody have a link to the last lap splits of the men's 1500m final? It would be cool to see each 100m split if the athletes as well. The women's splits were posted on another thread.

5000?? 800 times are far more relevant in this instance. Coe 1:41. Cram 1:42. Ryun 1:44. Morceli WR, El G still the WR holder. 1100 in 3 min is a warm up jog. All five would have gone sub-50 off that pace, especially in an Olympic final.

We don't have to wonder what Kiprop (3:26.69), Makhloufi (3:28.75), Iguider (3:28.79), Souleiman (3:29.58), Willis (3:29.66) could have run in such a race.

Also Kwemoi at 3:28.81 in that final, although he was not in contention due to his fall. Really one of the most stacked 1500 finals of all time, shame it’s now viewed as a “Mickey Mouse” race due to the tactics.
P.S. The top 6 finishers were also 6 of the top 7 by PR, and that 7th was Kwemoi who fell. Tactics only matter so much, at the end of the day the best man wins, and on that day Matthew Centrowitz Jr was the best man.

People are vastly underestimating the ability of certain athletes to close in a championship final. All of these runners are fantastic milers with superb speed but what Centro did so masterfully was control the race and then accelerate to hold position, perfectly paced to the line. Centro also has the advantage that he went through 1100 in 3 minutes with no traffic ahead of him. Guys like El G and Ryun have had issues in the pack before and, as far as I know, no one listed has the ability to run through another person. This wasn’t a race setup for Coe, El G, Morcelli, or anyone else besides Centro, because he made it his, took deontology early and then accelerated to hold position all the way to the line.

Can we stop with the "Centro controlled the race" non sense?
He deserves credit for positioning himself well for the last lap and closing super fast, but that is a set of circumstances outside his control (i.e. rest of athletes refusing to race a legit 1500 to play it all on a kick). It's fair to say that his competitors underestimated him by giving him a 1-2m headstart on the final 400-500, but you can't attribute this to a masterful, genius tactic that Centro pulled out of his a..e!
They all gambled. Sometimes you ein, sometimes you lose.

Centrowitz ran the best race and deservedly won the gold but the best man on the track that day was Asbel Kiprop. Four (easy) Diamond League wins, world leader, dominated the rounds. He then ran arrogantly and stupidly and threw away his chances.on the final.

The reason he had that crucial "headstart" was his masterful acceleration, almost imperceptible yet devastating in the moment. No mere digits on a stopwatch can capture the effect. There have been many Olympic finals won on a kickdown, but his was almost unique.
Anyone else who has had a chance to see him do accelerating strides in person around this era knows whereof I speak. Almost a ghostly effect.

No we can't stop, that's exactly what he did. He was challenged for the lead multiple times and ran just hard enough to stay ahead and because of that the field was content to sit back and wait.
You CAN attribute this to a masterful tactic that Centro pulled off because that's exactly what happened. The 1500 final would never have been a 3:50 race if Centro didn't slow it down and fend off challenges to speed up.
