False. People accidently ingest them because their drugs are tainted. Or there's the toddler in San Francisco who accidentally ingested some at the park.
Telling that people would rather let addicts die than get them help... and then have gall to complain about opioid deaths. Virtue signalling morons....
I live in a conservative, wealthy suburb that’s NIMBY. I’m not afraid to say that.
My most controversial opinion is that the projects (think Cabrini Green) should be rebuilt and all placed in one neighborhood. That neighborhood would have high crime (as a complete understatement) but crime would be isolated.
I'd love to see daily updates on the fentanyl epidemic. Number of overdose cases, deaths, data by county and state, average ages of these deaths, daily press conferences, etc. Heck there's even a vaccine now.
I think society should take it more seriously than COVID because it's killing more young people but it seems like we took COVID 100x more seriously.
There are proven ways to reduce drug overdose deaths and people have been promoting these strategies for years. The reason they have not been widely adopted is due to political barriers. For example, if you want to effectively address the opioid epidemic, then you need to increase prevention and recovery services for addicts. Among your political peers, these kinds of services are considered to be "welfare." Addicts are also generally considered to be weak, immoral, and criminals. Do you support welfare for criminals, Koko?
You also need to do more to educate the public on the dangers of fentanyl, how to find naloxone, and how to access the services available to addicts. Among your political peers, this kind of judgement-free public education considered to be "condoning drug use." Do you condone criminal drug use, Koko?
You also need to pass regulations to prevent opioids from being overprescribed by doctors and readily covered by insurers and to prevent Big Pharma from overloading communities with death pills. Among your political peers, government regulation of any sort is widely considered to be a slippery slope to communism. Do you support turning America into Venezuela, Koko?
You can see why many politicians prefer to sit on their hands and blame everything on "the border."
Youre correct that COVID is not very deadly for people under 45. Why don't we just kill all people > 50? Someone was making this argument in the RSV thread already. He wants to take their money.
COVID is over. Fentanyl will kill more Americans than COVID in 2023 and they'll be 50 years younger on average
Unlikely. I doubt COVID deaths will be < 100k.. but could be close! One can hope.
2020 Opioid deaths by age:
0-24: 6,129
25-34: 18,239
35-44: 17,666
45-54: 13,258
55+: 13,329
So no, Opioid deaths are not solely a young person issue.
I would recommend doing some research before spouting off in threads.
And how many of those people were 85 years old with 7 comorbidities.
My cousin's best friend took some cocaine that was laced with fentanyl and died.
He was 21
Some people that I know have tried to make fentanyl testing strips available for this reason. Politicians have blocked the effort. Your cousin’s friend’s life could have been saved if something like that were available to him.
A local sheriff around where I live will not allow his deputies to carry narcan, an antidote for opioids.

Yeah bro, you didn't have to tell me your sole goal is keep your property values high. Luckily things are changing at the state level. Florida and California (R and D) both have laws that are removing the right of municipalities to restrict multifamily housing. We're gonna build and you're gonna like it. America is growing. Get over it :)

It's insane. Boomers want to just blindly continue the War on Drugs and criminalize everything... despite 4 decades of evidence its a complete failure.
That will never happen where I live. Most of its current growth is due to upper-middle class immigrants who don’t want the ghetto to come in, and the other wealthy families feel the same way.

There will always be rural places to live. Just not near big cities. Growth requires density. It's ok, we can move you into a little home in the country and visit once a year!

Cope harder. My "political peers" aren't stopping your ideas from being implimented in any city. If any city or county eliminates opioid overdoses Red or Blue I will happily support those policies. Thats why I said I want county-wise dashboards on opioid deaths but for whatever reason it doesnt drive the clicks that COVID did.

Plenty of cities are trying many things. You are proving to be extremely under informed. Talk about thread backfiring. Koko the teenager goes home DEVASTATED
Chicago (and Illinois as a whole) has virtually decriminalized murder. Marilyn Mosby decriminalized minor crimes and the murder rate spiked - Baltimore is more unsafe than Honduras

We are talking about drug overdoses here. Did the Prohibition work? Did the War on Drugs work?

I don't think you know what cope means. I'm just telling you a fact. The reason why these solutions are not being implemented nationwide because many people/politicians with conservative values (like you!) strongly oppose them. That is just the way it is. I think we all know how the local sheriff who does not allow deputies to carry narcan voted in the last election.
Leaving it up local governments to solve a national drug epidemic that is particularly pronounced in rural areas is not going to solve anything. Local governments do not have the resources. We need a federal solution and the feds won't do sh*t because the Republicans in Congress don't care about people like your cousin's best friend.

Would you like to place a bet on the fact that there are certain politicians that belong a certain political party that are trying to stymie efforts to combat overdoses?
You know the examples I mentioned above about the sheriff that won’t allow his deputies to carry narcan and the politicians that are obstructing efforts to make opioid testing strips legal and available? Would you like to guess what political party they belong to?
To make it worse, some of those same politicians are trying to make it more difficult for rehab programs to get funding.
If they aren’t willing to make overdosing less likely it seems that they would be all for prevention and rehab but they’re not. Go figure…
