I've been holding off on buying a book through the Kickstarter just in case one of my family members is planning on gifting it to me for Christmas. If that doesn't happen, I'll definitely be back to buy a copy on the 26th. Congratulations on such an exciting project! We definitely need a Running with the Buffaloes for this new NAU era.
Wow--triggers memories of the summer of '68. Up there along with Ryun, George Young, and Conrad Nightingale. Fifty-plus years--time flies!
We were so fortune to have interviewed the legendary George Young for this book. He provided an incredible insight into why he and others chose Flagstaff over Lake Tahoe for their build up for the Mexico City Games.
Hi Matt- Not sure if it's too late, but if you could add another tier to get an ebook version, that would be great! I'm happy to contribute but tbh have no interested in a physical book. Even the same $30 price would be an instant buy for me. Otherwise I'll keep an eye on it and at least pledge the $10 if still needed in a few days.
Good luck!
Thanks for your message. That is a completely understandable request. I will check and see if an ebook option is possible to add as another tier for the Kickstarter.
For the past two years Ron Mann (Hall of Fame coach and coach of the NAU program from 1980-2004) and I (Matt Baxter - NAU athlete from 2016-2018) have teamed up to put together the story of this incredible program. I was fortunate to be on three of NAU's national championship teams during my time as an athlete at NAU. Ron and I have put together a story that anyone who is passionate about collegiate running can get excited about. The book will be released in September 2023 and tells a story that no one knew in its entirety...until now. This book explains how NAU has become a dynasty and Flagstaff has become a mecca for endurance athletes.
"Running Up the Mountain: Northern Arizona Altitude, Lumberjack Attitude, and the Building of a Distance Dynasty" is going to be a must read. If you would like to support our Kickstarter campaign to help us get this book ready for a big release in 2023, check out our page at Kickstarter .com and search "Publish the inspiring story of NAU cross country and Flagstaff."
You can also find more information about the book on our Kickstarter page.
Hope there is some history in the book AKA Richard Selby, Richard Sliney history. Also, Jim ? and Bo Reed and Kim White history and David Barney history.
And the Swedish women history. In other words, long history, not short history.
Congrats on making World XC team. Is it true you have to kick in $5,000 for this athlete self-funded team?
Goodonya.
This book covers the history of the program from its beginnings in 1965 to today and mentions many of those key athletes from the early years. The Swedish pipeline is another great piece of this story.
And yes, World XC is a self funded team for NZ. The funding some athletes are seeking is based on approximate costs for the trip.
Hope you are having a great Christmas if in NZ. I’m over in the Naki right now and the weather is beautiful.
This is from Baxter too, I read it 3 years ago and it had me pumped. Basically is a modern RWTB from an NAU perspective, great read.
Thanks for the link, but this guy sorely needed a copy editor and/or proofreader.
The past tense of "to lead" is not "lead." There is no apostrophe in "Nationals." Et cetera. Does it matter? Yeah, if stuff like that is distracting to a reader.

You are completely right. I released this as a rough diary not thinking much about editing it.
This new book has had four sets of eyes on it the whole way. Two of those people do editing for a living. The finished product is tidy and reads very well.
Remember, a national championship doesn't count unless you have five scorers who were all American born walk ons.
clowns would then rip the coach for a lack of talent ID in recruiting or unable to develop high level HS talent but was bailed out by getting lucky with generational walk-on’s.
I'm not smart enough to know whether this was a serious jab, or tongue in cheek. So, for others in my same boat, the top 7 from NCAA cross this year, in order:
Seeing brodey race in highschool, lots of his decisions seemed to be very individually focused. At least from an uneducated, outside perspective. Boy was I wrong with that assumption. Dude has come through for NAU time after time and looks like a real team leader regardless of his individual performance. Huge props to him.
1- ignorant at process of books getting published … do you say in this thread that book is done but won’t be released till September? Understand editing and printing but that seems like long time ago. 2- are going doing a go fund me or equivalent for World cross ? Do you have a link or sponsor picking that up? Ok. 3 things. Does story continue through present day? While you can only get as far as winning NC’s - i think Luis and nur have taken things to another level with W Ch finishes - be great if story covers 2022 track season ….
I feel this thread is not simply announcing that there's a cool book for sale. There's not. It is panhandling. I don't make a distinction between the bum on a street corner and anyone using an internet equivalent. Shelbo was panhandling. Occasionally a thread pops up asking readers to donate to somebody (hard to say whom sometimes) when a high school or college coach dies. All of the above (I include anyone holding a sign at a freeway off-ramp) boil down to:
"I want your money. Give it to me." This is what Houlihan was saying. It is what you are saying.
Now, we hear you want even more to go to Australia. If you can't afford to go, don't. If you figure you'll make more than the amount in question if you do go, it is an investment. I know I won't make more if you go. For me, paying your way is not an investment; it is simply an expense. If you don't feel it is worth it, don't go. If you don't believe professional massage, or a dietary supplement, or whatever, will cause you to earn more, don't buy them. But don't ask me to.
You are the one getting paid to run. Do so. Or don't. Why is it our responsibility to fund every project you think up?
