Katelyn Tuohy's 5000m ceiling looks like only 15:00s

Tuohy is not only a HS mile record holder but also 3000, 3200, and indoor 5000. Tuohy ran this year's top 1500 time and THREE of the top 10 5000m times.

Yes. That makes the point that she is good at the 1500 and mile. The posters were trying to claim that she is not like Simpson. If anything, Tuohy is looking more like the 1500 may be her best event.

Well, possibly the ratio of fast twitch to slow twitch muscle fibers factors into whether an athlete is more of a ‘distance type’. I dunno, but maybe Tuohy falls in the middle of the spectrum. Currently, her 1500m and 5000m times line up very well with Daniels’ Prediction:

To be a competitive 5000m runner in the professional level, you have to be a fast 1500/mile runner. Houlihan was a 2:01 800m runner but dominates the all-time distance event record lists. Look at Schweizer running more 1500m races this year, that is for the 5000m and 10000m.

To be more precise, I do not expect Tuohy to run low 14:40s next year; I'd expect her to improve a few secs in the 1500m and to 14:50s. But especially with the new shoes, many LD types can run much better 5k-10k with less than stellar 1500m. In any case, Tuohy seems by some margin the best miler of that batch of collegians (Valby, Cooke, Chelangat etc.).

And yes, Daniels is off for mid-distance extrapolation. He's pretty solid for 5k and longer although I think that the new shoes are proportionally helping more in HM and marathon, so this might be another confounder.

Well, Tuohy physically does look kind of ‘jacked’ like Houlihan (or vice versa), so maybe they both are more fast twitch?

My comment here is really just about the shoes. I get that with Nike, but Adidas? They seem to excel with sprinters. Nike seems to be a lot better for distance, not so sure otherwise.

Impossible to tell. Almost all of the recent American sub 4/sub 15 women, i.e. BTC, Purrier etc. were slower than Tuohy in HS/College but showed huge improvements at ~23-25 yo going full professional. Unless one wants to be really suspicious, one should grant that there are different trajectories. But getting eventually to 14:50s for a 4:06 runner (at 20) who is more of a long distance type (as her good XC and 5000m already showed as a teenager) is just a question of staying healthy.

And there is also that theory regarding ‘super-shoe responder’; although who knows how much difference that makes between athletes in the lower profile track shoes? For example, I suspect Kiera D’Amato gets a bigger relative return from the road super-shoes than the track super-shoes, but that is based on her limited track performances in the latter.

Rodenfels ran 15:08 last year and has never PR ever since. Tuohy ran 15:40s last year and now has 15:14 PR. Tuohy is 20, Rodenfels is 26. Rodenfels gets to have a "I'm better" moment beating top collegiate runners after a long cross country season, but line them up again in the middle of the outdoor season and you won't see the same result.

I don't know but many of the German national elite and subelite men have improved considerably in the last 3 years in 3k through marathon (especially in road running, though) and there are many NB and adidas athletes among them. Clearly, the difference to pre-2018 road shoes (and pre-2020 spikes) is greater than the relative differences between Nike, NB, adidas, whatever else there is.

You’re referring strictly to track shoes, correct? Because in the road marathons, Adidas definitely seems to be holding their own. I’m consequently compelled to try out the Adidas road super-shoe.

These threads are weird. Yes she is only 20 so people seem to default to thats so young, she's going to improve so much just because of age, yet she has only improved her 5k by 20 seconds since she was 15. Can anyone find me another athlete who improved so little during those years while still training and went on to improve exponentially there after. Most elites are dropping minutes over their teen years. Yes, I know she is NCAA champ before everyone jumps on me but that literally has nothing to do with progression, she probably would've been highly competitive in the NCAA as a 15 year old.

I hope she proves me wrong and I'm not hating, I just don't see where all this talk of huge progression is coming from

To me, she is a bit of an enigma in that regard.

Yeah I am talking about track shoes for distance. It just does not seem like adidas (or any of the other brands) are as good at distance track as Nike

But thinking about it, I guess also trainers for distance too. Nike supposedly helps with better recovery.

But hey, Gidey is less of a waif than Hissan, so who knows?
