They're conflating stories. Sellers ran in the elite field and got the 2nd place money. A woman in the general field placed 5th or something like that by time alone and complained she was out of the running for the money, unlike a man in her situation, so they paid her too. No way would she have her time running alone in a sparse elite field while everyone dropped out with hypothermia though.
The hubbub around Sellers wasn't that she was such a great marathon runner, it was that she could fit it in with her full-time demanding nurse job and was such an amateur. 2:25 is a great time for her coming back from having a baby and I guess for an American. But 2:18 is the new 2:20.

They weren't going to give it to her initially, but after public outcry I think they gave both her and the other girl second place money.
That day at Grandma’s was unfair. Absolutely perfect weather and temperature, and a massive tailwind the entire way. Men were running a full 4-5 minutes faster than usual. Still a great performance.

The world is in the middle of a reset for the Women's Marathon, with a current world record of 2:14:04 and someone who just came in at 2:14:18. World marathoning is now going to see a ton of folks coming in between 2:14 and 2:17. While I guess I appreciate Ms. Seller's progress, 2:25:45 is 11:39 slower than the world record and 7:14 slower than the American record. Why exactly should we care about Sarah Sellers as a competitor?

I think you have to hit low 2:20s now to matter even in US because of Hall, Sisson, and Keira. Sellers time is astonishing. I keep thinking of 20 to 30 years ago when just 2:35 was enough to land Nike contract and be on the front cover of RW.

Does anyone even remember who Sarah Sellers is? The one that American media, including the Brojos, hyped up to heaven after the 2018 Boston Marathon that was rainy and cold and she got second? She was supposed to be the greatest American women's marathoner according to all that hype.
But it looks to me that no one even remembers or cares who she is anymore despite setting a new marathon PB of 2:25:43 this summer at Grandma's Marathon. Not even any news acknowledgement by Women's Running (!!!) or any threads on LRC.

Its a good time, but nothing to write home about. When the top american women are 2:18 - 2:21, it's hard to get excited about a 2:25. If she ran that time back when all the Americans were over 2:20, I think more people would have noticed. There wasn't much hype. She did an amazing job in a very extreme marthon where most people completely imploded. We were intrigued how she would go in the future, and we knew she had to be a sub 2:30 woman to run that race in such insane conditions. So more curriosity than hype. Good for her that she is improving and becoming a top 10 American marathoner.
Fame is so fickle. Like, why does that runner who won an Olympic medal in one of the highest-profile events of the Games get more attention than another runner who is slower and has never qualified for a national team? I just can't figure it out.
