The main problem in Oregon is homelessness and property crime. In terms of violent crime Portland is one of the safest large metropolitan areas in the US (in contradiction to the hysteria stirred up by Fox News to scare old people).
Here is an article about how the worst crime states are actually Republican controlled. Personally I don’t think there is a Democrat vs Republican link, it is more driven by socioeconomic status and poverty.
Correction, Portland WAS one of the safest large metropolitan areas in the US. The study you referenced does not include data since Biden and the Democrats took control of government, does not look at the impact of the effect of decriminalization of drugs, or other relevant changes that took place over the past two years. Portland had 36 homicides in 2019, 57 in 2020, and 88 in 2021. They are on pace to exceed 2021's record total. You are looking at almost a 150% increase in the murder rate in a few years. That is significant and can't be blamed on the causative factors you site, as the unemployment rate has steadily declined as murders have increased.
Correction to your correction: Portland *IS STILL* one of the safest large metropolitan areas in the US. 150% of a small number is still a small number. It's how math works.
If I were to start a thread here about a billionaire "having enough" of Republicans and donating to Democrats, it would be deleted in 5 minutes.
Everyone already knows, almost every billionaire in America has voted for Obama, Clinton, Biden in the last 3 Presidential elections so your hypothetical story is a headline from maybe 20 years ago, not something that has happened anytime recently because they are already in lock-step with the DC Swamp.
Start a leftist thread! See how many people post. Please tell us what the current administration is doing besides destroying our country. Please don’t be a surf. Will wait.
Interesting that this thread remains up but anything pro democrat is deleted
you, your brother and the mods are racist democracy haters
C’mon man. At least try to be honest. There’s a Donald Trump thread, a January 6th thread, and even a Joe Biden that your ilk try to spam with anti-Trump nonsense just because there are no praises to be sung regarding Biden’s policies. Even on this thread you are free to discuss how you feel that Phil is wrong about the rise in crime, overdoses, open air drug markets, and homelessness in Oregon.
Yes, because those states include urban areas with high crime rates, run by liberals. Look, it is possible for big cities to be reasonably peaceful. New York City was for about 20 years. You just have to aggressively police the streets and put the bad people away. It’s hard, but simple. Liberals don’t want to do that. They believe everyone is inherently good, and any criminal behavior is caused by some external force. It’s total nonsense.
Are you really asserting that some people are inherently bad, then? Crime is driven by a confluence of socio-economic factors: lack of affordable housing, lack of jobs, inadequate physical and mental health care.... say what you want about Democrats but they put forth policies to try to address some of those problems that are driving crime rate spikes. Effective policing strategies are also an effective tool in combating crime and Democratic proposals which increase local funding for authorities such as police are also crucial.
I hear "tough on crime" this and "tough on crime" that from Republicans but it's like putting a band aid on a deep open wound. It is an entirely reactionary approach that doesn't get at the root of the problem which is that a lot of people in this country are struggling. There are some really ravaged areas not only in our inner cities but in deteriorating rural communities as well. When people feel disillusioned, angry, hopeless, etc crime rises. Calling for the implementation of a quasi-surveillance state is a short-sighted and overly simplistic solution.

A lot of you aren’t understanding life since the pandemic. You’re blaming things that happened after 2020 on Biden and democrats when we just went through something none of us have ever seen before. Where’s the stats on how many stores, restaurants, businesses closed? Until these things stabilize of course ppl are desperate.

As much as the right wingers whine about vaccines and masks, you lefties cry about anything Republican and claim that they are all racists. Listen to some moderates like Rogan and Maher (Independent and Democrat) and you’ll see why so many people are going to the right. I don’t think Maher will ever vote Republican but at least he acknowledges why the left is likely going to lose in the midterms.
I’m Libertarian but vote mostly Republican because the left is anti-liberty in their current agenda. Yeah, the right is guilty too with drug laws, and the Patriot Act.
Too bad we can’t get the center 25% of each Democrats and Republicans to get a real 3rd party to bake in some common sense platforms. Even if the Democrats put up a moderate candidate, I’d vote for them over Trump.

There has always been a poor segment of the US. This is nothing new. Crime is nothing new.
I’m not religious, so it’s one of the things I think Republicans get wrong, but there is still the concept of right and wrong. The biggest contributor to crime is income level, education, drugs and having a traditional family. 2 parents really reduces the odds that a child ends up in prison. I don’t care if it’s man and woman, man and man, 2 non-binaries, or whatever. Most kids need role models.
I would have been a loser if my dad wasn’t such a driven and intimidating person. However, when I succeeded at sports and school, he was always the first to congratulate me. All I cared about was girls and cars. He helped me realize that working harder than most people is the best odds at getting ahead and the rest will come to you.

No, I am asserting that all people are inherently bad. I believe in original sin, that all people are born flawed, and this cannot be changed via any educational, social, or political process. People commit crime because it is our nature to take what does not belong to us, to seek to dominate and oppress our fellow man. This can only change if God changes people from the inside out.
Thus the job of government is to stop the rot from advancing and overwhelming us all. If government works off the assumption that all people are good, and bad behavior is a result of some external force, it will get a lot of people killed, as it is now.
The only thing that works: locking people up. Getting those who cannot or will not control their base impulses off the streets. This will make communities safer, and will save lives.

Which are the ones trying to ban abortion? Where does that fit in your 'libertarian' fantasy?
Let's be honest, you call yourself 'Libertarian' because it sounds cooler and more intellectual than the reality that you're just the same as the red hatted Trumpers.

well i suppose you can understand why most people don't want to govern based on your beliefs about a made-up imaginary being.
