was Nicos run not high school only? was one of the pacers in college or something? regardless its not like he had anyone with him for a good majority of the race
This is lame if he has pacers. The reason Chris's run was cool was that it happened organically in a race and wasn't a contrived record attempt. I don't think Chris had any idea he could run that fast based on the 4:33, 4:30, 4:19 splits. I am all for setting up these kind of things to go for an overall HS record (still Galen's 13:37 I believe) but going for a "record" with a qualifying condition like "HS only" is odd. I feel like the spirt of the "HS only" record is for it to be done within the normal course of a high school season. Something similar to Gary Martin's 4:00 in a league meet last year (I know that isn't the HS only record) or German Fernandez's 8:34 at the CA state meet.

Would you be less of a Debbie Downer if the race wasn't contrived?
And not doing so at 10 pm on a weekday! Or weekend, for that matter! I like the sport but I'll just read the results in the morning, a high school time trial isn't compelling watching. But you do you, big guy.
I really do not think the bulk of the folks could care less about this. HS only? Probably with multiple paces? No One else had those, they had to get their time even in Elite fields in races not set up specifically for them. They were just in races with better older guys.
I agree. Plus this is cross country season. Why isn’t he focused on helping his team win cross country races? Seems selfish and attention-seeking to target an obscure record few people care about right in the middle of cross country season. He could make this attempt when the season is over. Why now? Bad teammate.
I love when people drop hot takes, but why couldn't u at least give a good argument to make your case bruh.
I get it if you don't care about HS only record attempts, but how is this any less interesting than Lex Young running 13:43 last year, or any HS guy running 3:59? They weren't even trying to break any records, they just wanted to run fast. Imo it's more interesting because when Lex ran 13:43, or Rupp ran 13:37, they didn't just have pacers, they had people to sit on for the entire race. They certainly weren't racing in "elite fields", they were racing against older guys who were about as good as the best high schoolers. Even if he has pacers, Gorze is gonna have to do a lot of leading, something Rupp and Lex, and most sub-4 guys didn't have to do at all.
It's also not selfish or attention seeking. His high school is the one putting on the 5k, just like they did last year, so his teammates are going to get the same opportunity to run fast. For Gorze, it's literally the best option, it's a win for literally everyone involved. He probably thinks he's in 13:50 shape, which means the HS only record is the perfect target. If he breaks it, he'll get to call himself a record holder and it'll be a big confidence boost to know he's in the best shape of his life right before state and nationals, and if he doesn't, it doesn't matter because it's XC season and he'll give 13:37 a shot this summer.
I really like the idea of doing a track 5k in the middle of XC season. It's late enough that everyone is in great shape, but still before the races that actually matter. It gives kids the best opportunity to get a 5k PR, takes away the incentive to run fast courses, and gives everyone a confidence boost because run way faster than the XC courses that their last 5k PR was set. As soon as I saw the announcement, I thought it should become far more commonplace. If you don't think a HS only record matters, I totally get it. If he runs 13:54, I don't care that it's a HS only record, I just think it's cool because it's a HS kid running 13:54 and that's fast as fook regardless of pacers or not.
The more I think about it I am not against him taking a crack at seeing how fast he can run a 5000. That's a worthwhile thing for him to go after and if he is in the best shape of his life right now and wants to get after it. I don't mind that at all.
I guess it was the comparison to Chris's 13:55 at Arcadia that bothered me. It just seems like this falls more in line with the 13:50 (?) that Nico Young ran a couple of years back where an entire event was set up just so that one athlete can go after a time. I don't even think that is a bad thing, just a different thing than signing up for a race that already existed and doing your best there.
That being said, I am pretty sure every HS 5000 is contrived to some extent as it isn't a championship distance in US high schools. The 5000 at Arcadia in 2008 may have even been run specifically because Chris wanted to run a 5000 (I don't know that this is true). Additionally, I'll admit that some of my bias towards and reason for mentioning the Chris Derrick 13:55 and the German Fernandez 8:34 is that I ran in both of those races.
At the end of the day I would still enjoy watching Tyrone attempting to run a fast 5000. Best of luck to him tonight.
Updating what I said a little. I see that this is a real meet and not just an attempt set up for him. Disregard the Nico Young attempt comparisons. There is nothing wrong with hosting a track meet in the fall so I'll remove my criticism and just say best of luck to Tyrone Gorze. I hope he and all the other runners entered run well.
There seems to be a little criticism along the lines of:
".....middle of cross-country season..."
"....team and teammates...."
"...leaving his school in the lurch when it counts..."
Whose to say he is even on a school-sponsored team with a coach and teammates? Who says he is interested in running on grass or whatever XC is on in that area? I think back to my Senior year. All my racing was strictly for my own satisfaction and, I guess, ego. No one felt they were being let down. I had no coach or teammates. Is this guy supposed to be on his school's XC team according to public opinion, or did he make any promises to them himself?

He can win basically every race he runs by going more than a minute slower than this attempt. What more do you think he needs to do to help his team win than getting first place in every race he runs?

First lap was too hot—close to sixty. Only had pacer for 1800 or so. He’s running slower than he needs for the record but it’s a fun thing to have streamed.
What are the odds that this broadcast on YouTube will be better than the Chicago Marathon broadcast on peacock?
Equally as painful to watch/listen to.
14:11 ish. Announcers were completely unaware there was a pacer. They even speculated on a possible injury when the pacer dropped out. His constant checking of his watch should have clued them in that he was a pacer.

Worst coverage ever. An absolute joke, no splits, camera all over the place and they even missed the start as coverage started after they ran 50 meters.
