he has said before that when he races/trains at a lower weight his results are worse. surely his team has it figured out better than any of us.
Yeah they seem really into the data. Over such a distance you would think every pound would make a big difference but maybe it's just something with him.
...it must be anecdotal because the physics, and especially marathon physics, doesn't lie, and at the end of the day, the guy in first ten off bike with the best running style won. That says it all for me, and I'm glad he did, because we still seem to have doubters of pure physics and economy when it comes to marathons
The bike split was out of this world, and then for that bloke to still run low 2:40's to me is probably performance of day. With a bit of tweaking, he still has loads to take off on that marathon

We are probably looking at 3-4lbs of fat and like 10 of muscle. If all he cared about was running, he would be skinner.
Interestingly both Iden and Laidlow did their IM PB yesterday. Usually Kona is not a place where you set your PB (obviously both are very new to the IM so it helps statistically).

Yeah IM PB isn't really too important because courses/weather vary so much. KB has the unofficial record of 7:21. But you wouldn't say he's 19 minutes better than Iden.
Before yesterday, 7:51 was the fastest time @ Kona. 4 bettered that. The top-10 were all under 8 hours. The top-end of the sport is getting better & better. It's really incredible to watch.
As for Gustav, 2:36 off the bike in those conditions is ridiculous. He ran that after swimming 2.4 miles & biking 112. All with temps in the 80s & a dew point in the 70s. What a machine. He could definitely pop a fast open half or full. Even LRCers who don't like triathlon can probably see how special of a performance this was.
I had just listened to Matt Dixon's Purple Patch Podcast about the evolution of professionals and how it would affect Kona last Wednesday. Couldn't have been more timely. To see 10 people go sub 8 hours is just mind boggling. I remember when Lange did it first in 2018 and then Frodeno one upped him with an even faster time in 2019. Now we have 10 people doing in on one day and in hot/humid conditions.
The age of the swim specialist or bike specialist or run specialist in professional triathlon is over. Either you are fast in all disciplines or youre going to get left out.
There is some hope for the rest of the field as Blummenfelt is going to focus on the 2024 olympics and won't be doing any long course racing next year or in 2024 I would imagine.
Iden said he doesn't know if he will race Kona again, though I think he said that right after the race and we've all said "never again" when in that condition.
Laidlow is only 23 and should be a force to be reckoned with for the foreseeable future.
I was glad to see Skipper finish in the top 5. He almost didn't make the trip to Kona due to financial strain from travel and lodging expenses. He mentioned he would have to place in the top 6 just to break even, so hopefully the junkyard dog made a bit of money.
Sanders will get out of the water in the front pack. He’s been training with front pack swimmer Colin Chartier.
When I read the thread title, my first thought is "I wonder what will go wrong with Lionel Sanders" ... because something will go wrong. Training beast but seems to always have bad execution at the biggest races.
Sadly it appears I've called it. I do like LS, but he has a pattern ...
