Both granddads were in WWII, one as a Navy corpsman who saw the worst of the battles in the South Pacific, the other as a cook who was in Hawaii awaiting orders to get shipped over to the invasion of the Japanese mainland that would have likely cost a million American lives when the Japanese surrendered. My father did his tours of duty during Vietnam as a translator with a TS clearance monitoring communications between the Vietcong and the North Koreans. If called to serve I would have, but at heart I am a pacifist based on the lessons I learned from my father and grandfather. I can remember distinctly when we went to war in Iraq how upset my grandfather was at the idea of sending young men to die in the desert for a cause that quite frankly he felt did not pose a significant threat to America. I hope that this Ukrainian conflict does not escalate into a larger, nuclear conflict, and that my daughters shall know lives of peace. Anyone who is gung ho about continued escalation in the war in Ukraine should take the time to read The Greatest Generation to understand how war shapes lives.

You're not the first to state if U.S. and allies would have fought Japan on Japanese mainland soil it would have been a million dead, I don't believe that number was forecasted. Bad Wigins has correctly stated numerous times on this site: Not only U.S. were victorious in Europe, so were The Soviets. Soviet Union would have significantly participated in pacifying Japan. Pacifying Japan was of greater value to Soviets than U.S. U.S. by 1945 was ruthless with fire bombing missions. Just a few numbers, no emotions. Germany lost about 75% of its forces on the Eastern (Soviet) front. Moreover, the US and Britain opened the Western front (in N-W France) in June 1944 only, when it became clear that the SU alone would "clear" the entire Europe from the nazi.

On the Pacific theatre, it were indeed the US that cleared the islands occupied by Japan. But the largest land battle was to defeat the Kwantung army that controlled part of China, Korea and Mongolia. Some 700+K troops, 155 light tanks, 5360 guns, and 1800 aircraft. SU relocated there some 1.5M troops from Europe (as it was agreed by Stalin and Roosevelt back in early 1945) and crashed it in two weeks. I am sure this fact is not well-known in the US.

Nagasaki and Hiroshima were basically the ONLY two worthy targets remaining in Japan. All other cities, bases, and industrial areas of note had already been razed. Some go so far as to say the last two bombs were not even required, that surrender was imminent without them. This situation is about 100 times more serious for Putin than the US. If it does escalate, do you think Putin will refrain from launching an attach directly on continental US? What will wake up and turn voters off this war more than bombs dropping on the US? Yes, Yes, Yes. M.A.D. But, Russia and Putin are already likely thinking that they have very few options… why not put the US in the same position? Why not make this war real for Americans… he and his generals might easily think. If thing do escalate, I see this as a highly likely scenario.
