I underestimated his performance based on that data

It's the norm for good marathoners to run a half marathon while in heavy marathon training about two weeks to a month out. For experienced marathon, they usually go only about marathon pace or a bit faster, however. Hall used to run a lot of lousy halfs before his marathons, even before some of his best marathons.

Utterly embarrassing

Idk I've done New Haven once, in 2019, & ended up running ~5s/mile faster in my fall marathon 5 weeks later. Didn't even have a bad race in New Haven. Went in without a taper, in full marathon training (decently high mileage), and had a similar weather day. Low-70s & full humidity is tough for fast running. These times look pretty solid, given the conditions. There are a few climbs on the 20k course. Would be a lot of fun to race it with good weather.

Imagine 40s/50s & no humidity in Chicago compared to this? & I know that's a big if. I just think it depends on what kind of weather the fall marathons get. That's kinda always been the deal with Americans. They run the US races & Chicago/NYC/Boston all have their challenges in terms of course & weather. If you get a decent day, Americans can drop some solid times. Look at Chicago in 2019 (16 under 2:15, 4 under 2:11, 10 under 2:12) or the Marathon Project. Mantz seems a cut above guys who have run 2:09-2:12 in good conditions. Korir has a 2:07-high, & that was with a pretty big positive split in Amsterdam.

Also, related, is Korir doing a fall marathon?? Curious if some of the other guys in the top-10 are running a fall marathon. Would want to look back at this & see how they do.

Well done Conner! He ran well in warm conditions. I hope that he does well in his marathon debut.
