If Lagat would run a few puke-and-go workouts himself, he could still easily run the first ever old man 45+ year old masters sub 4 mile. It's only 3 years since he ran a 2:12 marathon and 4 or 5 since his last 3:54 and a 13:06.
Some wiseass will of course claim 40 somethings always fall off a devastating cliff, based on their pathetic anecdotal sample-of-one own experience. But Lagat can do it.
Problem is he clearly doesn't want to, and that's that. He's already Bernard MF Lagat and doesn't need more MF cred.

A short cold bath helps cool core temperature and sunburned skin quickly and helps recovery.
But this is a Summertime thing. It's not a good idea after racing or training hard in cold weather.
Sitting in an ice bath for several minutes believing it's going to reduce muscle fatigue is fukcin nutso.
Why is he bragging about holding practice at illegal hours? I know that Tucson is hot, but 5 am would be a nightmare for a kid.

17.1.7.11.6.1 Required Activities Other Than Competition. [A] Required athletically related activities other than competition (and associated activities) shall not occur during a continuous eight-hour period between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
This has some exceptions, but none of them apply to Arizona

Thanks for referencing the NCAA rulebook which calls for a "continuous eight-hour period between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m." as a break from required activities. As long as the athletes are gone from practice by 9 p.m. they can be back at practice at 5 a.m. I personally never minded early a.m. workouts, and I don't think Lagat's athletes have any reason to complain.
Will any of these end up as international top runners, though? I cannot believe the US is underperforming in middle distance when you have so many resources.

Then Whiteman could go sub 4 1500 age 60.
Whiteman wants to do it because he was an elite but didn't win much of anything and ran in everyone's shadow. Still has things to prove. The mile is hard, you gotta have a motive.

We can also file "excessive grimacing" and "strained form" in with this.
I ran with a guy who was an 800m runner, and after (often during) raced paced workouts of reps between 200m and 600m, he would vomit. It annoyed the hell out of him. Sometimes he wouldn't even be pushing that hard, but the particular stress of the exercise would just trigger that response in his body.

Lagat has that 90s mentality. Lower mileage, puke workouts, ice baths. The reason he was so good is because he’s so ridiculously talented. He’s really the greatest talent we’ve ever seen. He should have had world records and multiple golds. However, he just did stupid stuff like the aforementioned.

I was an 800 guy and would puke after every race. Definitely annoying, and it’s pretty common amongst middle distance runners. One time our top long distance woman who was a National caliber runner you’ve probably heard of saw me puking and was very concerned and kept asking if I was sick. I guess it’s something physiologically that happens from a long anaerobic effort, and most longer distance runners never experience it unless they are sick or something went seriously wrong.

I like Lagat. I ran at the same time as him in college and talked to him a couple of times, including this summer when our kids were at the same meet. Ice baths are great. Throwing up every so often is okay. Waking up at five to run in the summer in Arizona is not only okay, it is advisable. I ran up camelback mountain early one day in the summer when I was in Arizona for one of my kids meets and went through 96 ounces of water and still felt like I needed more when I made it back to the resort at 8 am. You snowflakes need to toughen up.
Lagat’s women’s team finished last at conference and lost to USC last year. USC only uses walk ons and only fields a team so it can count as a sport. His men’s team only finished 4 runners, but if you score just 4 guys he still gets dead last at conference! By 30 points! With only scoring 4 guys!
Some may he has nowhere to go but up. ironically there is an ex Razorback lecturer on campus ( from their 80 and 90’s hey days) that Lagat failed to listen too even one bit. Nor did he heed any advice from Arizona’s storied distance coach from the 80’s and 90’s when he mentored after Li left.

My recollection is that Mark Wetmore advises taking it to the well (to the point of throwing up) no more than once a season?
Some of Lagat's praises seem reasonable to me but the puking one seems like a red flag. I'd think that kind of training would produce one or two standouts and a lot of burnouts. I don't think that's the right mentality for a college coach.

We all agree that Lagat is one of the greatest middle distance runners of all-time. Great for him! Now he's a coach of a D-1 program with a history of success. His college and pro coach James Li was less than impressive during his tenure in Tucson. In fact, Li only got the job because of his close friendship with the Director of X-C/TNF Fred Harvey. Li had Some spot Kenyans here and there, but NEVER a solid team. I don't believe the men ever won a Pac-12 title or West Region title in 18 years. Li bails from the program (weird), and Lagat slips in to take over and promptly humiliates himself and the school at Pac-12's and a no show at West Regionals.
He needs to step up this season. A lot of people are watching. Good Luck.
