High school teams doing mile repeats at XC race pace or faster. I did them a few times a season and I think a lot of other programs do as well because it's simple and hard and makes you feel like you really accomplished something. But unless you're reliably under 16 for 5K mile repeats at race pace are gonna be too long in duration for a good interval stimulus. It would be a great workout at threshold pace, but we all know the boys are gonna race that sh*t and just wreck themselves under most coaches. I believe Daniels even alludes to this when he talks about how interval pace work should be 3-5 minutes in duration, and how many programs screw up by using mile repeats as an interval workout.
the other issue is that most high school teams end up racing 10+ times per year. these workouts on top of this become superfluous. not the case for all teams and all runners, just a generalized statement.
